Despite my knee’s progress I really worried this morning about the stairs, I even thought about stoping a station earlier and getting a taxi.

What I discovered by looking at the situation with new eyes, however, looking from a different perspective, was there was an accessible route.

A route that avoided all the steps and still got me to the physio 😀

Isn’t that the same when we’re trying to solve a problem?

That looking with the same eyes can stop us seeing the alternatives available to us?

Where might you need to look at a situation you’re struggling about with new eyes?

I love the idea of adding ‘seeing with new eyes’ to my prescription for what works when problem solving.

I must also remember to add ‘making assumptions’ to the list of things that don’t help.

I can’t tell you how much joy I’m getting from these apples.

I’ve a glut of cooking apples from my tree and decided to put some outside the house on the pavement for people to take as needed.

Within a few minutes I noticed a family stop and put some apples in the base of their pushchair, and walk away smiling.

Another time a mother and child stopped to take a few apples chatting as they did so.

David Hamilton has written a lot about the impact of kindness, and random acts of kindness on our wellbeing.

I could feel the positive impact of that kindness yesterday, and can’t wait to put the apples out again this morning.

A reminder that kindness impacts both the giver and receiver - and is added to my prescription for wellbeing list of things that support my wellbeing.

How can you send the ripples of kindness out into the world today?

The strawberries and sweet peas in my garden this week don’t pay attention about whether now is the time they ‘should’ be making their harvest available - they just make best use of the conditions and do what they do best.

What conditions enable you to flourish?

And one additional question, from my Prescription for Wellbeing Journal, what conditions inhibit that flourishing?

And how can you do more of those zAgs that accelerate your growth and less of the zIgs that inhibit your growth?

The journal is a great place to make a note of your zIgs & zAgs for future reference - because when you’re struggling, out of sorts or stuck it’s easy to forget about the conditions that help you to flourish.

One lesson I’ve learnt over recent weeks has been the value of focusing on one course until successful.

It’s certainly been a challenge to stick with the seeming montonony of the daily exercises, and do’s and don’ts and even can’s and can’ts around my new knee.

And yet it’s the singular focus of attention on my knee and wellbeing that’s providing the progress and success I’m seeing.

Where might you be focusing too widely and on too many things, and how can you focus on one course in order to succeed?

In my for focus I’m, therefore, adding ‘focusing on one course’ as something to do, and adding ‘getting distracted with the next shiney idea’ and ‘juggling too many balls’ to my list of things to stop doing.

To me these images demonstrate the difference between me focusing on one course (the last image) or me getting distracted along the way and losing sight of the end result and perhaps never getting to there (the first five images).

How to use the prescription for wellbeing template:

1. Pick an outcome

What outcome do you want a prescription for - eg to feel less anxious, more focussed, confident in exams, calm, patient and so on.

2. What are your symptoms

A short summary of how you're feeling - because writing them down might jog your memory about what’s worked in the past when you’ve had these symptoms before – or remind you that you’ve had the symptoms many times before and that a visit to the Doctor might be a good idea this time.

You may also find that writing the symptoms helps you redefine the outcome – ie that instead of calm the antidote would be focus.

3. What sayings are you resonating with (see future posts about how to capitalise and get insight from these).

4. What things do you know that usually work.

What do you know that you can do that would help reduce the symptoms or achieve the outcome stated? What’s worked for you in the past? What do other people find helpful? What do experts suggest you could do?

5. What things do you know that don’t work or hinder progress being made.

What do you know that you do that might be hindering progress with respect to the outcome? What’s hindered your progress in the past? What do other people stop doing to support the outcome? What do experts suggest you should stop doing?

6. Do more of 4 and less of 5.

Remember you don’t have to do this alone so do ask for help from family, friends, health practitioners, doctors, counsellors, therapists, coaches, colleagues, neighbours or the cat.

7. Update your prescription

Over time there may be diminishing returns from some actions, and others may make the difference the majority of the time (for example, and however bizarre it sounds, for me doing plank or weights usually gets me back on track!). It’s therefore important to update your prescription or even write a new one rather than revisiting a prescription that worked 3 years ago but just doesn't seem to be cutting it at the moment.

The Your Prescription for Wellbeing Journal helps you to remember what works and supports you when you're stuck, don't know what to do, are off track or out of sorts, and also reminds you about what hinders you too.

The aim being to do more of one and less of the other.

A reminder because for example when caught up in anger, frustration, or anxiety we can forget about the things we could do that would make us feel better.

You could just write one prescription of things that usually work for you, you could write a number of prescriptions to tackle specific situations such as for example dealing with exam nerves or reducing anxiety about the forthcoming presentation, you could write a prescription a day, and/or you could use the journal as a family or team.

In other words use the prescription journal in whatever way makes most sense for you and helps you to get the most out of your day - as my what is normal poem, that I share in the journal, says:

"My normal is not your normal, mine isn't yours"

Follow the page as I share more about the journal and how you can use it to get back on track.

As it’s printed on demand you can buy copies of the journal from Amazon around the world and get delivery within a few days.
