If having a home birth appeals to you at all and it's something you're considering then it's worth booking in with your local home birth team anyway 🏡

It doesn't mean you're locked in, it just means you've got the option to then call the midwives out to you when you're in labour. If you choose not to then you just simply go to the hospital or birth centre!

A lot of trusts don't have an up and running home birth team due to staffing issues so it's worth having the conversation sooner rather than later to see if it's still an option for you.

You could also go down the route of an independent midwife and of course you don't have to have midwives present if you don't want to.

A calm birth doesn't necessarily mean a quiet and pain free one. It's not allowing fear or panic to take over and that's where hypnobirthing can help you and your birth partner prepare.

Understanding what's happening in your body or what to expect during different interventions can help reduce the chance of your fight and flight response kicking in.

Plus you'll be armed with lots of helpful techniques to practice during pregnancy to help stay calm during labour.

📢 The NHS wants to hear your views on a proposal about midwife-led birthing units at County Hospital in Stafford and Samuel Johnson Community Hospital in Lichfield.

Both units would still offer antenatal and postnatal appointments, as they do now. Birthing services, which temporarily closed there since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, would close permanently.

The NHS is especially keen to hear from people who are:

☑️ Planning a pregnancy
☑️ Currently pregnant
☑️ New parents
☑️ Anyone who has recently used maternity services

No final decisions have been made yet.

A comb can be used as a tool during labour to help manage pain - you simply squeeze it in your hand during contractions.

The teeth hit accurpressure points in your palm which can reduce anxiety and release endorphins and it also uses gate control theory which distracts your brain from the pain of your contractions ✨

You can also use it alongside other things like your breathing techniques, a tens machine, being in a pool, gas and air etc. so it really is such a handy little tool and for the price, why not try it if it might help?!

Just remember to focus on keeping your jaw relaxed because if you're squeezing a comb you don't want your whole body to tense up!

🤰🏼Whoever you choose to be your birth partner/team should be someone who fully supports you and your choices. If they're involved in the prep then they'll fully understand why you want/are going certain things. They'll be able to support you better and advocate for you.

🏡There's a bit of a misconception that home birth isn't safe for your first birth but that's not the case. For the majority of healthy women with healthy pregnancies birth is not a medical event and staying at home can have lots of benefits.

🤱🏼There's lots you can learn about feeding before baby is born to help you feel prepared. Things like what a good latch looks like, feeding cues, what to expect in those first days/weeks, where you can get help if you needed it.

🚫Sometimes the answer might just be no and thats enough. Or sometimes you might want to ask questions, ask for second opinions, for more information or for alternative options.

✨I probably would have felt more prepared with all of these things if I'd have had a doula 😆 but I didn't really know about doulas until after my first birth. Doulas provide a variety of in person and virtual support antenatally, during birth and postnatally. Customisable to suit you, your family, your needs and your budget.

"No benefit for a child to be breastfed beyond 6 months". How worrying to think someone might have watched that TV show today and think they shouldn't be breastfeeding their child if that's what they are happy doing/hoped to do in the future 😫

The benefits to both the mother and a child continue long past infancy. So I'll just be over here feeding my boy to sleep. How selfish 🤯🤯

For my lovely local followers🤰🏼

Latest birth stats for Derby & Burton. Walsall and Good Hope don’t regularly share theirs but the figures are likely to be similar.

🤯 33% induction rate
🤯 44% caesarean rate

While some of these interventions are absolutely necessary and even life-saving, many are not. A lot of these are happening for reasons like being “overdue” or “failure to progres" which is alot more about the environment, support or the system timelines than your individual needs.

🤯 0.8% home births
🤯 5% birth centres

That’s not because most people wouldn’t benefit from these environments but due to lack of access, support, and information. So many women are being labelled “high risk” which then closes doors to these options when in fact they should still be open for discussion if that's what you want.

Part of your birth prep should be learning how to navigate the maternity system, understanding your options, and feeling confident making informed decisions.

Get in touch to find out how my hypnobirthing courses or doula support can help you with this 💛
