After a few weeks off for annual leave my counselling service is now back open. After a time of contemplation and reflection (whist sat on a sun bed in Spain) I wanted to share a couple of memes that have stayed with me. Don’t let the expectations and fears of others hold you back from your true potential. Do what makes YOU happy and live YOUR best life.. Never any Regrets. 💪

I think for those who have seen the Netflix drama Adolescence over the last week can agree that it is a wonderful yet harrowing and thought provoking drama. Throughout this last week it has been a hot topic for conversation with my fellow academics, our students and also with my clients. This article is a wonderful exploration attempting to explore the themes portrayed in the program from the perspective of a psychotherapist.

People ask all the time what brought me to counselling? It has been said that when we are faced with a psychological struggle we either suppress or intellectualise our feelings. Today marks the 8th anniversary of my mums passing. The natural process of grief proved to be the catalyst for my training. It’s helped me to process my grief and in turn learn so much about myself. I now not only work daily with my clients who are grieving but also deliver lectures to trainee psychologists and counsellors discussing my understanding of grief. Everyday I get to honour the memory and love that my parents gave me. I always feel that when I speak to students about grief my parents are alive in the room. Even though I still struggle everyday, being able to bring them back to life in my practice gives me a relationship with them in death… Grief never goes away. Grief is just love with no where to go… it’s so very important to give your love somewhere to go… give your loved ones a voice and keep your relationship alive with them…. Don’t try and shrink your love… let it be a part of you and grow around your grief.. ❤️

This week as a result of my own feelings towards the subject I have been reading about imposter syndrome. Enlightening was the fact that it’s more common than you expect. The debilitating effects of feeling like a fraud can have a real detrimental impact on your wellbeing as a professional as you attempt to prove your worth to those around you. This could be linked to family narratives regarding work ethic that is instilled in you as a child. Ultimately, stopping you from applying for jobs and achieving posts you would be amazing at. Instead of being held back by your feelings see them as your allies. If you do really feel like a fraud the chances you are probably not and you are very good at what you do……. you just haven’t properly acknowledge it yet.
