Psychotherapy is the process of using your relationship with your therapist in order to find the answers that you seek. By thinking together about your issues, psychotherapy can help you understand more about yourself, and thereby discover why you often make the choices that you do. When we look for solutions to the dilemmas we face in life, these solutions are often to be found within ourselves. Oftentimes we have feelings that have been painful and difficult; your therapist can help you find your own voice and help you give words to such feelings. How can psychotherapy help me? Psychotherapy can help you understand yourself and enable you to make more informed choices in all aspects of your life. It can also help you understand what certain problems represent within your life. Why do I feel depressed, what is missing from my life, why am I constantly anxious? Why choose psychotherapy? Psychotherapy is not symptom based. Rather it focuses on you as a person, often in the context of your relationship with your partner or your relationship with your wider family. In this way, I can help you look at what gets in the way of your being as successful and happy as you would wish.

I have worked within mental health services for most of my adult life. I have seen them change for better and worse but the one thing that remains the same is people’s pain and anguish.

We are constantly striving to find new and better ways of understanding ourselves and others, myself included. I am due to start another new training in February developed by Mark Solms in neuro psychoanalytic work. I am looking forward to this as for me it brings together my love of psychoanalysis, biology perhaps a way for me of integrating my experiences over a life time of working.

However, what I really believe in is the importance of one human being meeting with another in order to understand. A sharing of the pain, joy and grief along the way and the sense of connectedness that can exist between us.

Being authentic, open and non-judging all words we know well but how hard it can be to hold that place inside of ourselves. Perhaps life is meant to be filled with challenges and of course it is these challenges that pushes our awareness and development. There is however, no greater gift than being allowed to share another’s journey to self discovery

Empathy is such an important part of who we are as human beings. It allows us insight into what it may be like to be in someone else’s shoes. It can promote compassion and kindness. Some people have an abundance of empathy naturally and others have to learn it. But whatever way it is acquired it is a valuable assest to who we are as a human being.

Empathy isn't just innate — it can be trained by associating another person’s happiness with personal rewards.

Estrangement
Dictionary meaning: ‘The fact of no longer being on friendly terms or part of a social group’.

Recently, I have been considering the topic of estrangement, as some clients have experienced it in relation to their families of origin. There are various forms of estrangement and ways it can present itself. In certain situations, it involves complete separation from someone, while in others, it may mean reducing or limiting contact.
Humans are naturally social beings who feel significant pain from estrangement. Some people choose to sever ties with family, while others face forced separation. This disconnectedness often leads individuals to question their actions and wonder if things could have been different.
Individuals may frequently experience a profound sense of powerlessness, with emotional pain persisting over time. While there is often an expectation that every issue can be resolved, I have observed numerous instances—both among adults and children—where circumstances could not be fully remedied, requiring individuals to manage ongoing challenges.
I welcome insights or perspectives from others regarding this experience.

“The word listen contains the same letters as the word silent.” –Alfred Brendel

The biggest mistake most people make when it comes to listening is they’re so focused on what they’re going to say next or what the other person is saying is going to affect them that they fail to hear what’s being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

A mistake we can all make at times.
