A nasty case of gout! This gentleman presented in clinic with sudden onset of a red, hot, painful big toe joint (1st MTPJ) with no recollection of any trauma or injury. Following discussion with the patient regarding medication and methods to reduce the flare, at our recommendation he sought a blood test via his GP which showed extremely raised uric acid levels (the key indicator for gout). He is now on a medication called Allopurinol long-term which should help prevent this issue recurring! Another happy pain-free individual! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

People often ask us if our only solution to ingrown toe nails is surgery: absolutely not! 90% of ingrown toe nails we see can be managed conservatively and resolve without the need for any invasive procedures. Just like this patient who was clearly not cutting their nails properly and leaving large spikes down the sides. After a quick consultation we were able to remove the culprit and thankfully no further care has been needed! A success in our book! ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿฆถ๐Ÿป

NHS England reported 3,890 ingrown toenails presented at A&E last winter. Podiatrists are the experts in foot and lower limb care and can provide specialist care for ingrown nails, including minor surgery to resolve them. Check with your local NHS for podiatry access criteria or find your nearest private podiatrist at https://rcpod.org.uk/find-a-podiatrist and save A&E for the critical care.

Yet again another patient who had developed thickened toe nails (onychauxis), and instead of seeking help sooner, struggled in silence for over a year! Also presenting with a fungal nail (onychomycosis) to the right 4th nail, we provided professional treatment and advice, discussing all available treatment options!
