September is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

At Rehab Jigsaw, we see first-hand the impact Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia can have. Not only on individuals, but also on their families, carers, and workplaces. Did you know that around 5% of all those diagnosed each year are under the age of 65?

As Occupational Therapists, our role is to help people live as independently and meaningfully as possible, supporting daily routines, adapting environments, and providing practical strategies that make a real difference - at home and at work.

This month, we’re proud to stand alongside those raising awareness, challenging stigma, and advocating for better understanding and support.

Together, we can create communities where people with Alzheimer’s feel valued, included, and supported.

Sustainable Return to Work = Monitoring + Review + Adjustments

Returning to work isn’t a fixed event—it’s a work in progress that needs to be checked in on.

šŸ”¹ Plans that go unchecked can fail
šŸ”¹ Needs change as recovery progresses
šŸ”¹ Job roles often shift over time

Who should be involved?
Line Managers – for day-to-day insight
Employees – for lived experience
Occupational Therapists – to assess, problem-solve, and adapt the plan

OTs help ensure return to work is not just ā€œback to businessā€ but back to health, function, and purpose.

Why employers should care:
āœ”ļø Reduces repeat absence
āœ”ļø Improves productivity
āœ”ļø Demonstrates good practice
āœ”ļø Supports employee retention

Monitoring makes the difference. RTW isn’t one and done—it’s a process. OTs can guide it.

Work Wellness - a challenge....

REFRESH - Employees can feel guilt around taking time off for annual leave and we are coming to peak holiday time in the UK. As occupational therapists, we encourage rest and recharging, and time to completely disconnect from work. This has a positive impact on health, helping to restore balance, and making a positive impact on work performance and productivity in the longer term.

Get yourself in the frame of mind to lead up to a period of leave by trying these ideas:

Find a comfortable space where you feel energised - think green spaces, daylight, squishy seating. Make this space free of devices and go old-school with a notebook and pen - and your favourite beverage - in work time, I'm opting for a steamy mug of Earl Grey tea!

Start with a prompt - "On my next trip away, I'd like to...." Visualise a place, the scenery, who you may be with, how you will spend your time. How will you relax? What will you try to see? What might you eat or drink? How might you feel?

Personally? I'm travelling to visit my son overseas, who I havent seen since October last year. I'm travelling with other family members for some really special memory making times. The scenery will include beaches, cities, deserts and it will be a mixture of modern and historical experiences. I will be on the road, with no hugely fixed agenda, but an open and curious mind. I will walk, swim, take photographs and eat and drink with my family. I'm going to feel grateful for family time and connected to my loved ones, open to exploring, free from daily work and home routines.

What's on your agenda? I'd love to know!

šŸ” Returning to Work After Illness or Injury?
Creating a plan is just the start—but keeping it under review is what makes it work. Too often, return-to-work plans are written, agreed… and then left on a shelf. But life isn’t static—and neither is recovery.

Plans need to be monitored, reviewed and adjusted to reflect:
āž”ļø Changes in the person’s health
āž”ļø Real-world workplace demands
āž”ļø What’s working well—and what isn’t

This is where Occupational Therapists can make all the difference:

We listen, observe, and check how things are going in practice
We help employees and managers work together to fine-tune support
We offer practical solutions for fatigue, pain, cognitive issues, and more

Why it matters for employers:
āœ” Reduces the chance of sickness absence returning
āœ” Supports staff morale and loyalty
āœ” Helps meet your legal obligations
āœ” Improves long-term productivity

āœ… Return-to-work isn’t a tick-box—it’s a journey. With the right support, it can be a successful and sustainable one.

If your business values your staff and wants to support them back into work safely and well—we’re here to help.

Complex health issues in workplaces are our speciality. We are trained in analysis of function with a biopsychosocial lens which helps us to see people a little differently. There is absolutely a place in workplace health for both approaches but today's referral seemed perfect - a request for a functional workplace assessment of a person with:
Depression, PTSD, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, eating disorder and fibromyalgia.

What we will do? Ask questions and listen carefully. Take time to get to know the job role and then assess what he can and can't do, from a physical, sensory, psychological, cognitive and social perspective. Match job demands with the function (observed) and make recommendations to support a sustainable return to work. Then, write a reasoned and costed report with practical solutions.

All in a day's work as an OT!

🌿 IBS Awareness Month - Managing IBS in the Workplace 🌿

IBS can be a hidden challenge for many employees, impacting their comfort and performance at work. As Occupational Therapists, we help assess the physical and emotional toll of IBS and offer practical strategies to manage symptoms.

šŸ› ļø OT’s Role in IBS Management:
• Recommend ergonomic solutions for comfort during long hours at a desk.
• Help develop flexible working arrangements to accommodate unpredictable symptoms.
• Provide coping strategies to manage stress, a common trigger for IBS.
* Support employees with IBS to ensure they feel empowered and productive in their work environments.

šŸ’š IBS Awareness Month | April 2025 šŸ’š

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects up to 1 in 5 people in the UK, and for many, it can significantly interfere with day-to-day functioning—including their ability to engage fully in work and meaningful routines.

For individuals managing IBS, the unpredictability of symptoms like abdominal pain, fatigue, and frequent bathroom visits can affect concentration, confidence, and even job retention.

🧩 Occupational Therapists: Supporting People with IBS at Work 🧩

Occupational therapists play a key role in helping individuals manage the physical, psychological, and environmental challenges of IBS in the workplace.

Here’s how:

Personalised work routines: Supporting pacing, activity scheduling, and energy conservation tailored to the individual’s symptom pattern.

Workplace adjustments: Advising on practical solutions like easy bathroom access, flexible break times, or remote/hybrid working options.

Stress and anxiety management: Offering evidence-informed techniques such as mindfulness, graded exposure, or sensory regulation to reduce stress-related flare-ups.

Employer liaison and education: Helping workplaces create inclusive environments through better awareness and practical support plans.

Functional impact assessments: Understanding how IBS affects occupational performance across work, self-care, and leisure—and identifying solutions to improve quality of life.

🌱 Living and working well with IBS is possible—with the right supports in place.

Let’s use this awareness month to advocate for understanding, flexibility, and inclusion in our workplaces.

International Caesarean Awareness Month | April 2025

Did you know that around 1 in 4 women in the UK give birth via caesarean section? While caesarean births are often necessary and life-saving, recovery can be complex—particularly when navigating the return to work. Some new mothers are returning to work after 26 weeks and may well have some ongoing issues.

To raise awareness, it’s vital to recognise that postpartum recovery extends beyond the immediate physical healing. It includes the emotional, cognitive, and occupational demands placed on women as they balance new motherhood and employment responsibilities.

🧩 Occupational Therapists: Supporting Post-Caesarean Recovery at Work

Occupational therapists are uniquely positioned to provide evidence-based, practical, and compassionate support to women recovering from caesarean births. Here’s how we help:

We consider the person holistically, and pay special attention to the work environment and essential job demands, alongside the daily living tasks of the new Mum. Sometimes our input can be around supporting physical comfort and reducing strain (e.g. desk setup, manual handling, seating supports), or perhaps around managing ongoing physical challenges such as core weakness, scarring, or nerve sensitivity.

Mental health and emotional well-being is paramount - we explore strategies which may include helping with role adjustment, and confidence in returning to work.

🧠 A thoughtful return-to-work process isn’t just about policies—it’s about people.

As occupational therapists, we work collaboratively with individuals and employers to ensure meaningful, safe, and sustainable work participation post-birth.

Let’s raise awareness and advocate for better postpartum support in workplaces across the UK.
