Nutrition & Hydration Week: Small Changes, Big Impact
March 16–22, 2026

This week is a great reminder that good food and hydration aren’t just essentials — they’re powerful tools for comfort, connection, and wellbeing for people living with dementia.

Here are a few simple takeaways that make a real difference:

Hydration happens in many forms
Water, tea, juice, jelly, fruit, soups — it all counts. Offering drinks little and often can be easier than big glasses.
Finger foods are freedom
Bite‑sized options help maintain independence and reduce mealtime stress. Think fruit slices, mini sandwiches, cheese cubes, veggie sticks.
Colour matters
Bright plates and clear contrasts help food stand out, making meals more inviting and easier to navigate.
Routine brings comfort
Regular mealtimes create predictability and reduce anxiety. Familiar favourites can spark appetite and memories.
Make it social
Eating together encourages better intake and turns meals into moments of connection.WelcomeMe Dementia Together Wirral GIFT Cafe Puddington

Dignity first
Gentle prompts, patience, and choice go a long way. Mealtimes should feel relaxed, never rushed.

Let’s use this week to celebrate the joy of good food, shared moments, and the small daily habits that support those living with dementia to thrive.

Dry January & Dementia: A Fresh Start for Brain Health
From all of us at www.DRC.care

As Dry January begins, it’s a good moment to reflect on how small lifestyle changes can protect brain health — especially for those living with dementia, carers, and older adults navigating everyday challenges.

Alcohol and cognition
Heavy drinking is linked to brain shrinkage, memory loss, and increased risk of dementia — particularly vascular and young-onset types Dementia UK +3.

Older drivers and reaction times
Alcohol slows reflexes and impairs judgement — a concern for older drivers, where balance, vision, and coordination may already be changing. Staying alcohol-free supports safer mobility and independence.

Balance and falls
Alcohol affects the inner ear and muscle control, increasing the risk of falls. For people with dementia, who may already experience instability, this can lead to serious injury and hospitalisation.

Modifiable risks matter
Up to 45% of dementia cases worldwide could be prevented or delayed by addressing known risk factors — including alcohol use Alzheimer's .... Dry January is a chance to reset, reflect, and reduce risk in a supportive way.

Whether you’re cutting back, staying dry, or simply curious, DRC is here with resources, encouragement, and community.

Let’s start 2026 with clarity, care, and a commitment to brain health.

Winter Dehydration - Stay
Hydrated This Season!
Did you know it's just as easy to get dehydrated in winter as it is in summer?
Cold weather can trick us into drinking less, even though our bodies still lose fluid throughout the day.
Here's how to stay hydrated during the colder months:
Drink water regularly - don't wait
until you feel thirsty
