WHEN BIRTH DOESN'T FOLLOW THE 'PLAN'
It’s not always the events of birth that feel traumatic, it’s how suddenly everything can shift, and how unprepared (and not listened to) we feel in that moment.
Having a birth plan is a brilliant way to clarify your hopes, values, and preferences. To guide others in the birth room with you. But birth doesn’t always follow a script. And when things change quickly, not having discussed your options or how you want to respond can leave you feeling powerless, unheard and overwhelmed.
That’s why I encourage every client to explore the “what ifs” in advance:
🤔 What if you’re offered an induction?
🤔 What if labour slows or speeds up unexpectedly?
🤔 What if your care provider recommends intervention?
🤔 What if you feel like things are out of your control?
Talking these things through ahead of time, especially with your birth partner, helps you stay grounded and feel in control. It gives you space to ask questions, weigh your options, and still feel in charge, even if the plan changes.
A positive birth isn’t about everything going “to plan.” It’s about feeling informed, supported and confident in the choices you make, whatever those end up being.
If you want support creating a flexible, confident birth plan (and mindset), I’d love to help.
