Meet Jennifer 👓

There aren't many people who can say they've given four decades to one place. Jennifer can.

Jenn has been part of Wigram & Ware since 1983, trained by her father, the late Ronald Hart, eventually taking over as Senior Partner upon his retirement in 2010.

A Suffolk girl through and through, she has spent her career looking after this community, just as her father did before her.

As a fully qualified dispensing optician and contact lens specialist, Jenn brings an extraordinary depth of knowledge to every patient she sees. She has a particular passion for supporting children with dyslexia through colorimetry, work that makes a genuine, life-changing difference to young patients and their families.

And if you've admired the frames on our shelves, there's a good chance Jenn found them. She and Nick travel regularly across Europe in search of collections that are beautiful, individual and worth the journey.

When was your last eye exam?👀

It's one of those things that's easy to put off, especially if your vision feels fine. But that's exactly the point. Many of the conditions we look for during an eye examination have no obvious symptoms in their early stages.

A thorough eye examination isn't just about updating your prescription. It's a window into your overall health. Changes in the eye can indicate high blood pressure, diabetes and other systemic conditions, often before you'd notice anything yourself.

The 20-20-20 rule 👀

If you spend a lot of time in front of a screen, and most of us do, this one's worth knowing.

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds.

It sounds simple, but it gives the muscles in your eyes a chance to relax, reducing the fatigue and discomfort that builds up over a long day at a desk.

Symptoms like tired eyes, headaches, blurred vision and difficulty focussing are all common signs that your eyes are working harder than they should. The 20-20-20 rule helps, but if you're finding screen use genuinely uncomfortable, it may be worth considering occupational lenses.

Designed specifically for screen and desk use, they offer a wider, more relaxed field of vision at the distances you actually work at, rather than a standard prescription which isn't optimised for a day in front of a laptop.

Meet Melanie👁️

Some introductions need no warm-up, and Melanie is one of them.

As one of our Optometrists and Contact Lens Practitioners, Melanie has been part of the Wigram & Ware story since 1987, when she joined the practice to complete her pre-registration training under the guidance of Mr Hart. She qualified in 1988 and, well — she never left. We're very glad she didn't.

What makes Melanie so special? It's the genuine love she has for every part of the job. From staying ahead of the latest clinical advances to that unmistakable feeling when a patient walks out wearing a pair of glasses that are just right for them.

When she's not in practice, you'll find her out on long walks with her two rescue dogs, or around a table with good food, good company, and the odd glass of vino.

Are you cleaning your glasses correctly?👓

Here's how we recommend doing it:

👁️ Start with a rinse. If your glasses are particularly dirty, hold them under the tap for a few moments first. This lifts away any grit or dust that could scratch your lenses. Avoid hot water — it can damage lens coatings over time.

👁️ Use the right solution. Spray both sides of your lenses with an alcohol-free lens cleaning solution. Everyday products like hand soap or screen cleaner might seem harmless, but they can strip the coatings that protect your lenses.

👁️ Choose the right cloth. Clean with a proper lens cloth — not a tissue, not your sleeve. Tissues are rougher than they seem and can cause tiny scratches you might not notice at first but will over time.

👁️ Don't forget the cloth itself. Wash it at 30° about once a month, or replace it regularly. A dirty cloth won't do much good.

And here's the good news, when you buy your glasses from us, we include a complimentary cleaning cloth and solution as standard. We'll also give you free refills and replacement cloths for the entire life of your specs. Just pop in anytime to top up.

Meet Stuart 👓

Stuart joined us back in 1998 as a pre-registration Optician and has been part of the Wigram & Ware family ever since, qualifying as an Optometrist in 1999 and becoming a Partner in 2002.

He covers all aspects of optometric care, including contact lenses, dry eye and colourimetry for reading difficulties.

Away from the practice, Stuart is a keen birdwatcher, a Kings Lynn F.C. season ticket holder, and Chairman of the Bury St. Edmunds Film Society. When he's not out in nature or watching the match, you'll find him at a board game, on the sofa with his cats Lemon and Hastings, or arguing about which film deserves a second watch.

We're very lucky to have him indeed!
