🥉Double Bronze for Bury Boccia at National Finals🥉
Congratulations to Bury Boccia and Bury Boccia Bears for their remarkable double podium finish after taking bronze medals in both of England’s national team competitions last weekend.
The Boccia England National Team Finals and the Super League Cup were held concurrently in Nottingham, and Bury Boccia was the only club in the country to qualify and medal in both.
Bury Boccia Bears, promoted to the elite Super League last year after winning the National League Finals, had a strong debut season, finishing 6th out of 8 teams. In the Super League Cup, they excelled, going on to win the third-place playoff and securing bronze medals against the best teams in the country.
Team members Tom Brown and Phil Ross, both from Bury, and Connor Dixon from Carlisle proudly brought the medals home.
Connor said:
“It was a tough competition and we gave it our all every game. It was great that we won the 3rd/4th play off to finish third in the country. A great achievement for our first season playing against England’s top Boccia teams.”
Meanwhile, in the National League Finals, Bury Boccia –another one of the club’s teams - also put on a stellar performance. They qualified for the finals by winning their regional league.
At the finals in Nottingham they finished third overall out of 55 teams nationwide. This was even better than their 5th place finish last year.
Bury Boccia was represented by Isabella Wood (Radcliffe), John Jefferson (Prestwich), Ben Corfield (Bury), and Gill Speight (Ramsbottom).
Gill reflected on the day:
“I think I played well – we all did very well to come 3rd. It was great to be in the finals again as we practiced and competed so hard to get there. The atmosphere in Nottingham was exciting, with so many boccia players wanting to win. We had a great day out, returning home with bronze medals and plenty of smiles on our faces.”
Ben added:
“We did very well in our Boccia finals to be in 3rd place, especially I did direct hits in front of the Jack ball on my technique.”
Isabella Wood team captain said “I feel proud to have made amazing progress by finishing 3rd.”
John kept it simple:
“I felt great about being 3rd at the finals.”
Coach Paul McCormick praised both teams, saying:
“These guys just keep on amazing me. They work hard in training, they believe in themselves and they consistently achieve outstanding results.”
