Second Intensive Interaction training course with support staff from Persona Care and Support. Some lovely discussions about early communication, the importance of recording how we best communicate and how rewarding supprting people can be.

Day 1 of the 3 day person centred communication course with Lancashire councils childrens service. So far we have heard some lovely examples of person centred communication support. Looking forward to getting to know the staff more and exploring new approaches to commnication

Our vocabulary for this film was requested by Persona Care and Support in Bury. The films were funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and are part of our Communicate and Connect project. We had 4 speech and laguage therapy students on placement for a month and they worked with interns from Digital independent Specialist College ( Disc) in Manchester. Please see our latest resources in our Communicate and Connect project which you can view on our YouTube channel ( you can subscribe to for free) The Signalong vocabulary was chosen by self advocates at Rochdale People First, a speak up group for adults with learning disabilities and autism. The films were co produced with interns from Digitial Independent Specialist College DISC in Manchester. The signers were speech and language therapy students from The University of Manchester and non exec director Gareth Welford. Funded by The National Lottery Community Fund with grateful thanks.

There is often confusion about the difference between Signalong and BSL. Signalong is a sign support system it is not a language in it's own right. Signalong was developed to support people with communication needs often associated with learning disabilities.
BSL has a different word order a bit like French and German do, it has a culture and history.
When signing using Signalong we only sign the main ideas or key words. This is to help people understand. We use speech as we sign. It is part of a total communication approach.

Please have a look at one of our new Signalong films. We prioritised some fire prevention signs with the SEND lead for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS). We hope the vocabulary helps raise awareness of fire preventions and safety in the home.
The films were made with self-advocates and student Speech & Language Therapists from the University of Manchester and filmed by young people who attend a specialist digital college in Manchester called DISC. The funding came from The National Lottery Community Fund.
