They're a craft-y lot at Grundy Hub so it's no surprise that hat decorating, paper crafts and baking was how they chose to celebrate Easter this year!

Looking to meet new people or try new things?
If you're over 50 and live in the Bury borough, you can refer yourself to Grundy Hub Get Social and start making new friends, or just read the paper and get a tasty hot dinner.

We all need information when we're looking for help, so accessibility at Persona needs to start before we support people.

If it isn't easy to find out what we do, who we are and where we are we're putting barriers in the way of people who might need our support, for themselves or for a loved one.

That's why you'll always see Alt Text for screen readers on every social media post and captions on all our videos (unless we've made a human error - it happens!).

Every day we work to make our website content accessible; adding suggestions from people we support, writing in easy to understand language (using less jargon and explaining the jargon we do use) and adding Easy Read information. But the tool that helps most people is our Recite Me toolbar.

The toolbar has a screen reader that can be used with a mouse or with keyboard controls. It reads the website aloud at whatever speed you want or you can customise each page to read with text and background colour and adjustable text size. It can translate into over 100 languages and its other tools include a dictionary, ruler, and magnifying glass.

Our latest report shows that in one month, the toolbar helped 89 people to understand 479 pages on our website - and because it's so easy to read, each person looked at 5.3 pages, when the average number of web pages people visit is 2.8. So we know what we're doing works, but we'll never stop looking for ways to make it even better!

PS we're not quite sure what .3 or .8 of a page is either, but we'll take it as a win!

Last week we talked about some of the training we've been doing to ensure everyone we support and work with feels safe, understood and included. Coral, one of our support workers, has shared this about her recent Signalong training with Total Communication Services CIC

" From this training I am confident I can communicate basic needs and wants with them. to ensure I am person centred.

This consequently improves the relationships, and their safety and wellbeing by having a better understanding of one another.

The people I support will now feel more included and a part of the community as Signalong is an inclusive form of communication. "

As part of the National Lottery funded Communicate and Connect project, we have been working closely with services who provide support for adults with learning disabilities, particularly Persona Care and support Bury. Support workers can be overlooked as key to the success of communication with peop...

We are surrounded by creative people, so to give everyone even more opportunities to express themselves, learn and contribute to something bigger than the service they use, we've launched two workshops:

- Persona Prints
- Woodpecker Workshop

These are just some of our Persona Prints creations so far...bags, t-shirts, water bottles and mugs people love and birthday presents too!

We're running taster sessions for people we support in learning disability day services and our printing workshop is a mini social enterprise too.

We'll let you know what's coming next!

April is Autism Acceptance Month but we're always asking ourselves:
What do we want to do to support autistic people in Bury and how can we do this to the best of our ability?
When we say we enable support that makes a positive difference - what does it mean in real life?

For us, it's ensuring everyone we support and work with feels
- informed
- safe
- empowered

To make it easier for everyone to get involved, learn and achieve their goals, we've been supporting our caring colleagues and those who support them with the tools they need to be aware of different people's needs and feel confident to make reasonable adjustments, whatever they may be.

That includes training in:
- Oliver McGowan Training
- Training in Systematic Instruction (TSI training)
- Intensive Interaction training
and wherever we can, we're learning from trainers with lived experience who are paid for their time and expertise.

It’s not only people we support who will benefit from this; our colleagues will too. When we understand people's strengths and needs better, everyone benefits: people with autism, learning disabilities and other neurodivergences or additional needs, whether they have a diagnosis or not.

Thank you to these people for making our learning possible:

Mark's celebrated his baptism after a year long wait.

He decided to be baptised because he wanted to feel properly part of the congregation but he waited to talk about his decision with family and make sure it was right for him.

Mark is grateful for the support of the Supported Living team, who arranged all the meetings, helped him prepare and made sure he had everything he needed on the day, which he ended with a curry.

He says 'I felt very special. I now feel truly part of the church and the congregation are now part of my family'.

Congratulations!
