This week is Mental Health Awareness week. A poor diet is strongly associated with physical disease. Links to mental wellbeing are at an earlier stage but energy levels can certainly be affected by the foods we eat – even if it is just being Hangry! Also gut health is important to wellbeing. An inflamed gut may affect mood. Also the neurotransmitter Serotonin linked to wellbeing, calmness and feelings of happiness resides mainly in the gut. Nourish the gut to avoid inflammation and feel calmer.

Today is “Eat Brussel Sprouts Day”. Sprouts are cruciferous vegetables related to broccoli, collard greens, kale, cabbage and cauliflower, many of which are dark, leafy greens and all of which are very healthy. They, offer many nutrients including, fibre, Vitamin K (90% of RDA in a single 80g serving), Folate, Vitamin C, calcium and potassium. There is some evidence that cruciferous vegetables help keep blood sugar levels steady and therefore may decrease the risk of diabetes or pre-diabetes. High in antioxidants, they may also reduce inflammation and associated diseases Try them roasted, fried (in a little olive oil), steamed, boiled or air fried as a tasty accompaniment to any meal, not just Christmas dinner!

Wishing you a very happy Christmas. Make it a healthy one too. You can cut the calories and boost the nutrients in your Christmas meal by trying these healthy swaps: chicken skewers instead of pigs in blankets, sweet potatoes baked in a little oil instead of roasted potatoes cooked in goose fat and a gin and slimline tonic instead of Baileys. Each swap will save you about 90 calories - worth a try.

Enjoy root vegetables and squashes whilst in season. They taste great in soups and casseroles or roasted with wholegrain rice, couscous or quinoa. They are low in fat and cholesterol, making them heart-healthy choices and are rich in dietary fibre, which aids digestion, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and supports weight management. These vegetables are a good sources of vitamins and essential minerals as well as antioxidants which may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and promote overall well-being.

With the days getting shorter, a reminder to take a Vitamin D supplement from October to March. Vitamin D increases calcium and phosphate absorption which keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. We largely get Vitamin D from sunlight. Dietary sources include oily fish, eggs and red meat but these do not provide adequate amounts. Supplementation of 10mcg a day is therefore recommended.

Producing a few of your own vegetables and herbs is extremely satisfying. It is also the ultimate in non-processed food! We had a crop of courgettes, peppers and tomatoes this year as well as a few herbs. We have eaten courgette and tomato risotto a few times this summer. See link for recipe. https://www.nickymannnutrition.co.uk/blog
Courgettes, tomatoes and peppers are all good sources of vitamin C which being a water-soluble vitamin can be damaged in storage, transportation and cooking. Growing your own must be the quickest and safest way from plant to plate, thus preserving the most Vit C. r

As you may have noticed blackberries are in season. They are growing everywhere at the moment. I took this picture whilst out walking earlier this week. As well as being readily available and a delicious, sweet berry they’re also good for you. They contain a high level of Vitamin C which is essential in the production of protein for tissue and bones. They are also full of fibre and antioxidants. Pick a few and enjoy.

You may have heard claims about the health benefits of fermented food – anti-inflammatory, immune boosting anti-diabetic, mood and cognitive benefits and even blood pressure improvements. Well the great news is there is evidence that supports these claims. Fermented foods are left to sit and steep until the sugars and carbs interact with bacteria, yeast and microbes resulting in the creation of healthy probiotics, the key to gut health. Fermented food also has a high concentration of vitamins and minerals. Try: natural yogurt with live cultures, kefir, tofu, miso and sauerkraut but start with small amounts to let your gut adjust! Enjoy.

Traditional fish & chips with its batter and deep frying is not the best meal for the waistline or heart but try the following for a much healthier take on this British favourite.
Combine some breadcrumbs (about 40g for 2 people) with a little chopped parsley, black pepper and lemon zest. Spoon this mixture over white fish fillets and drizzle with a little olive oil before roasting on a non-stick tray with some cherry tomatoes on the vine for about 10 minutes at about 200°C.
Serve with homemade baked sweet potato wedges (30 mins at 200°C) and lightly crushed peas with chopped mint. Enjoy.

Malbec World Day “Dia Mundial del Malbec” commemorates the day in 1853 on which President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento of Argentina made it his mission to transform the country’s wine industry by bringing in new vines from around the world, amongst which was Malbec. Although too much alcohol is bad for you, studies have shown that a small glass of red wine a few times a week could reduce cholesterol, be good for your heart and improve your gut microbiome. Why not have a glass on Monday!
