Race to the Stones 100K Challenge
My name is Georgina Powell (53), I live in Buxton and work at Buxton Medical Practice.
Having completed several 50K races and two 50 mile races, I am now preparing for my next big running challenge with Threshold Trail Series in July.
I am running as part of the Parkinson’s UK fundraising team, as my Father has been living with the condition for nearly 20yrs and I have cared for many patients with the condition during my 30+ yrs as a nurse.
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disease which affects 145,000 people in the UK, as well as being the fastest growing neurological condition worldwide. It affects people in many ways and progresses differently for everyone. Parkinson’s UK provides information, support and undertakes research to help develop treatments and find a cure.
This year I have decided to test myself by undertaking a 2 day event and have opted to run the 100k from Lewknor to Avebury Stone Circle split with a night’s camping in Wantage. It is run along the UKs oldest trail, ending at the UNESCO World Heritage site.
I have fantastic support from my husband/family, work colleagues and from my running group, (despite many of them thinking I am crazy), as well as the wider running community via social media.
Many of my longer runs are done alone, sometimes in horrible weather conditions, which is good mental training. I am averaging 30-40 miles a week at this stage in my training plan, as well as two strength training sessions a week at New Bodies Gym, when running and work allows.
I have also had amazing fundraising support from friends and work colleagues but would love to increase my total more. I know times are hard for many at the moment but if anyone can and would like to sponsor me, my fundraising page can be found at : - https://events.parkinsons.org.uk/fundraisers/georginapowell
