Celebrating Black History Month

This month, our teams across North Shields are coming together to celebrate Black History Month — a time to reflect, learn, and honour the incredible contributions of Black people throughout history and today.

Across our workplaces, colleagues will be attending a series of talks and discussions focused on why we celebrate Black History Month, exploring its origins, significance, and the impact it continues to have in shaping a more inclusive future.

These sessions are an opportunity to raise awareness, share stories, and inspire meaningful conversations that celebrate diversity and equality. By learning from the past, we can continue building a workplace — and a world — where everyone’s voice is valued and represented.

Together, we celebrate Black history, embrace the present, and look forward to a future driven by unity, respect, and progress.

Today, in honour and memory and with shared grief we would like to offer you a simple poem.

A Child's Love Lives On

The silence echoes, a constant, hollow sound,
Where laughter used to bloom, now grief is found.
A parent's heart, forever marked by loss,
A love like yours, it bears a heavy cross.
But in the depths of sorrow, light can gleam,
A memory's embrace, a cherished dream.
For love transcends the veil, it cannot fade,
A child's sweet spirit, forever stays inlaid.
Though tears may fall like rain on fertile ground,
And absence lingers, a painful, wounding sound,

Armed Forces Day 2025

Here at Byker Coop Funeralcare, we are always deeply humbled and honoured to work closely with SSAFA and Local Regiments supporting families in the local area accessing support and guidance when needed and Anne has a particular soft spot for a couple of retired veterans who often call in for a coffee and a chat. If you find yourself in need of support, please call in and she can guide you towards one of the many charities that are available when needed.

Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday each June, falling this year on 28 June.

Armed Forces Day is a chance to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving personnel to Service families, veterans and cadets.

Showing support for the Armed Forces provides a much-valued morale boost for serving personnel, veterans and their families. You can find out more about what they are doing at home and around the world by visiting the official sites of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.

Our Aim is to Celebrate Father's Day alongside you, whilst supporting you through your loss and your grief. Share in your memories, write a message and place a lasting Heart on our Memorial Tree.

You can also find out how we can help you create an everlasting Tribute Page with our chosen partner Much Loved where you can share memories, light a candle, or add a photo of someone special. It’s a space to reflect, remember, and feel connected.

No matter how you choose to spend Father's Day, we hope you find comfort and please know, our door is always open for you if you cannot attend on Friday.

A child who loses a parent is called an orphan. A spouse who loses their partner is called a widow or widower. But there is no word for a parent who loses a child.

Creating A Fairer Future For Young People - Barnardo's

Anne in our Byker Funeral home has spent much of May focussing on Mental Health, guiding in supporting our ourselves, our colleagues as well as continuing the care and support to our clients. As adults, it's often a difficult conversation to have and all to easy to say "I'm Fine" when in reality sometimes we need a little something more than we did yesterday.

Sadly 41% of young people have worried about their mental wellbeing in the last 6 months. Here at Coop Funeralcare, we all think the next generation deserve a better future, so Co-op has teamed up with Barnardo’s to bring communities together to support young people.

If you have any concerns about your own mental health or of someone close to you, no matter your age, pop in to our branch where you will be in a fully safe and supported environment and where we can signpost you to access support systems and organisations.
