Climate change is already affecting the way we live – many of us are switching to electric cars, taking fewer flights and recycling as much as possible. But what about the end of life? How can we hold environmentally friendly funerals too? See the link at the bottom to access the full article, however:

You don’t have to wait 20 or 30 years for a more environmentally friendly funeral. Apart from choosing a natural or woodland burial, there’s a number of tweaks you can make to a traditional celebration.

Why not go for a coffin created with sustainably managed raw materials, like willow, or an urn made from natural materials such as bamboo or banana leaves? You could also have an electric hearse – we’re starting to introduce electric and hybrid hearses to our fleet, and plan to phase out all fossil fuel vehicles over the next 10 years.

Whatever you decide to do, remember, the main goal is to help the environment.

Ask your funeral director for more eco-friendly funeral ideas, or help to arrange a natural burial for yourself or your loved one. For yourself, take advantage of up to £250 off the cost of a Funeral Plan for Coop Members until 29th August where you can let us know that this is one of your personal wishes.

National Raspberry Cake Day is a fun little treat on July 31st each year, and to celebrate, Anne and Nikki at Byker Coop Funeralcare are inviting you over on Friday, August 1st, for some delicious cake, great coffee, and even better company. It’s a lovely chance to chat and maybe even discuss those important ‘Elephant in the Room’ topics—like your funeral wishes.
Anne, who recently qualified through the Coop Funeral Director Apprenticeship, has some wonderfully creative and out-of-the-box ideas about her own funeral, while Nikki brings a more traditional perspective. If you’re thinking about future planning or interested in becoming a Coop Member — possibly with up to £250 off your plans — this relaxed, friendly get-together is the perfect opportunity to have a open and easy conversation and to meet one of our newer members to the team, Asfar.
We’d love to see you there!

Join Us This Saturday At Newcastle Pride

We believe there’s no place for prejudice in our communities and everyone is welcome. When you shop, bank or arrange a funeral with the Co-op, you’re supporting our commitment to LGBTQ+ causes. For many years, we’ve been investing in projects that can make a difference.

Coop Funeralcare is proud to stand alongside our colleagues at Coop Food who were the only retailer to speak in Parliament in support of the Equal Marriage Bill. We are proud that all Co-op Academy schools are Stonewall Champions. They have also help support set-up of a LGBTQ+ schools alliance. This is being delivered by the Proud Trust.

When arranging a funeral with us, Everyone is welcome.

Janet's family decided to add a Mallard engine on to her order of service and condolence book as a way for her late husband to be included in the service as he was a train driver 🚂

Wildflower seeds and a mixture of pins were also attached to the order of services for loved ones to take home as a keepsake

Thank you to Samantha from Mexborough Funeralcare for organising such a special tribute 💙

National Bereaved Parents Day
"Together We're Stronger"

Today, in honour and memory and with shared grief we would like to offer you a simple poem.

A Child's Love Lives On

The silence echoes, a constant, hollow sound,
Where laughter used to bloom, now grief is found.
A parent's heart, forever marked by loss,
A love like yours, it bears a heavy cross.
But in the depths of sorrow, light can gleam,
A memory's embrace, a cherished dream.
For love transcends the veil, it cannot fade,
A child's sweet spirit, forever stays inlaid.
Though tears may fall like rain on fertile ground,
And absence lingers, a painful, wounding sound,
Remember strength, in shared experiences found,
In unity, healing and hope abound.
The path ahead may twist and turn and wind,
But love's enduring legacy you'll find.
A tapestry of moments, bright and true,
A child's love lives on, forever with you.

Armed Forces Day 2025

Here at Byker Coop Funeralcare, we are always deeply humbled and honoured to work closely with SSAFA and Local Regiments supporting families in the local area accessing support and guidance when needed and Anne has a particular soft spot for a couple of retired veterans who often call in for a coffee and a chat. If you find yourself in need of support, please call in and she can guide you towards one of the many charities that are available when needed.

Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday each June, falling this year on 28 June.

Armed Forces Day is a chance to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving personnel to Service families, veterans and cadets.

Showing support for the Armed Forces provides a much-valued morale boost for serving personnel, veterans and their families. You can find out more about what they are doing at home and around the world by visiting the official sites of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.

*SSAFA is the Armed Forces Charity providing:

Creating A Fairer Future For Young People - Barnardo's

Anne in our Byker Funeral home has spent much of May focussing on Mental Health, guiding in supporting our ourselves, our colleagues as well as continuing the care and support to our clients. As adults, it's often a difficult conversation to have and all to easy to say "I'm Fine" when in reality sometimes we need a little something more than we did yesterday.

Sadly 41% of young people have worried about their mental wellbeing in the last 6 months. Here at Coop Funeralcare, we all think the next generation deserve a better future, so Co-op has teamed up with Barnardo’s to bring communities together to support young people.

If you have any concerns about your own mental health or of someone close to you, no matter your age, pop in to our branch where you will be in a fully safe and supported environment and where we can signpost you to access support systems and organisations.

May Is Mental Health Awareness Month

Within Funeralcare we see the devastating impact that Grief can have on Mental Health.

Grief Exists because LOVE Existed First.

Here at Byker Coop Funeralcare, we have a range of support systems in place if you find yourself in that exhausting place of swinging between "I'm Fine, I'm OK" to "I'm Not Sure How Much More I Can Take".

Anne has extensive first hand experience and our door is always open for you to pop in, have a coffee and simply just breeeeeathe for a moment. Please know, we are here for you, in the heart of the community, no matter what.

“Together, We Honour The Past And Celebrate A Future Built On Unity, Hope, Love And Peace”

TODAY on 8 May 2025, we mark the historic 80th anniversary of VE Day, with the people, families and communities of our great nation coming together to unite and celebrate 80 years of peace since the end of World War II in Europe that so many millions paid the ultimate sacrifice to achieve it.

VE Day 80 is not only a tribute to those who fought for the freedom we all enjoy today, but also a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have defined our country ever since.

Be part of this Anniversary providing a day of Joy, Reflection and Celebration, as part of the Commonwealth’s 2.4 billion people, Reaffirming Our Commitment to World Peace, ensuring future generations understand and cherish its value.
