Pete of .coaching injured his finger/forearm tendon a while back. He continued to climb and actually found that certain styles of climbing didn’t aggravate the injury. But several weeks on, he was still getting some pain, so he came for a consultation.

When we tested the injured finger in isolation in the painful position (drag) we found that he had a 61% strength difference between injured and non injured sides of his body. We used this information to target his rehab more effectively.

Ideally for climbers we want to be fairly equal left to right, or at least within 10%. Addressing this weakness for Pete now is really important for preventing re-Injury further down the line. Currently this test is telling us that pulling hard in the drag position (or firing off holds in the drag) is likely to cause further injury. Strength testing at regular intervals will help to guide his return to hard bouldering.

I had the pleasure of working with a lovely group of women at She Climbs this weekend. Thanks so much for having me ! We are looking at injury prevention with a particular focus on warmups. We touched on female specific considerations including the impact of the menstrual cycle and perimenopause.

Presenting at the annual Trauma Care Conference today in The Remote and Rural stream. I had a really fun day presenting and listening to the other presenters. This conference stream is attended by a range of medical professionals who support outdoor events such as ultra marathons and work with mountain rescue.

I was teaching on managing lower limb injuries in remote environments. We looked at assessing different injuries, helping participants with decision making about when to pull out or carry on as well as ways of supporting people and ‘damage limitation’!

I had an article published 😁. Thanks for including this. Some simple, actionable advice to maintain a healthy back whilst doing a very physical job. Having had some pretty bad injuries during my outdoor career, I am really passionate about helping others to stay fit and healthy in their outdoor jobs. It kind of feels like I’ve come full circle and I’m super happy I can contribute to the mountaineering and climbing community in this way.
