🧠 Recognising the signs of stroke could save a life

This World Stroke Day (29 October), Stroke Specialist Nurses Alys Evans and Jordan Hodson from Ysbyty Gwynedd are reminding everyone to act FAST if they suspect someone is having a stroke.

👨 F – Face: Has their face fallen on one side?
💪A – Arms: Can they raise both arms and keep them there?
🗣️S – Speech: Slurred OR loss of speech?
⏰T – Time: Time to call 999 immediately.

Alys, who has spent several years caring for stroke patients, said: “Every minute counts when it comes to stroke. Getting to the Emergency Department as soon as possible can make all the difference to recovery.”

Jordan, who also has a background in working on a specialist stroke ward, added: “We see the incredible progress people can make with the right treatment and support — but that can only start once they get to hospital quickly. If in doubt, call 999.”

‘I felt totally unsupported. I was numb.’

Moira Owens’s husband, Idwal, was diagnosed with vascular dementia.

‘I had all these questions running around my mind but, apart from being given a few leaflets, we were packed off without any support. I thought, ‘What am I going to do now?’

‘After the experience of Idwal’s dementia diagnosis, I didn’t want to sit back. I want to change the experience for other people.

‘I got involved with campaigning after Idwal started going to activities organised by a local organisation called Dementia Actif Gwynedd.

‘I’ve spoken on BBC Radio Cymru about my experiences and at Plaid Cymru and Welsh Labour party conferences.

‘I want to make a difference. If I can help in any way, I will. If something isn’t right, I’ll say.

‘Like the time Idwal was discharged from hospital and I wasn’t told – I made sure the staff knew this was unacceptable. Anything could have happened to him.

‘I want the people making decisions to understand our needs and make dementia a priority.

‘We have to shout loud about dementia. It’s not like when you’ve broken your arm or you’ve hurt your face – it’s not obvious, you can’t see it. It’s hidden.

‘My hope is that people will not be in the same place as me when Idwal was diagnosed. I don’t want to see the partners, friends and family of people who are newly diagnosed with dementia left on their own.

‘If enough of us speak up, hopefully the system will improve eventually.

‘Campaigning helps me but the main thing is that it helps other people, that’s what I care about.’

I’m Naomi owner of Gofal Teg I have worked in the care sector for just over 3 years from carer to care supervisor I’ve seen and done it all. I am 27 and live in Llanberis and have lived in surrounding areas most of my life. Even since child I have cared and helped my elders in the family and found my passion to work in the care sector when I took a carer job 3 years ago. I fell in love with it. The care the community and getting to know diffrent people and there stories. I love the challenges in care how everyone has a diffrent background and story. I started Gofal Teg so that I could provide top quality care for those in need.
