Hugs & cwtches! I know many of us are missing hugs with special people we are missing. But do you know that self-hugging can have some pretty big benefits, so itโs a great way to show yourself some love.
๐งโโ๏ธSelf-hugging can help relieve pain
If you have your arms crossed, your brain gets mixed up over the location of the pain signal. While your brain works this out, it has a reduced capacity to process other information, including the intensity of pain.
Pain relief associated with hugging may have another explanation, the hormone oxytocin, released with soothing touch, may play a role in relieving pain by decreasing feelings of anxiety and fear.
๐งโโ๏ธ Self-hugging can help you feel safe and secure
You play the most important role in your own wellness, and hugging yourself can help remind yourself of your power. Instead of waiting for someone else to offer support and make you feel better, you can take steps to comfort yourself.
๐งโโ๏ธSelf-hugging improves your mood
Touch, even your own touch, helps promote relaxation. It lowers levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) in your body which can help relieve some of your tension and stress.
๐งโโ๏ธ Self-hugging increases self-compassion
Like touch, self-compassion can lower cortisol levels and improve overall well-being. Practicing self-kindness helps make it easier to accept yourself, as you are, and it increases mindful acceptance and self-esteem and improves your general outlook on life.
๐งโโ๏ธHow to do it
* Cross your arms around your body, bringing opposite hands on upper arms in a way that feels natural and comfortable.
*Squeeze yourself with just enough pressure to create the hug sensation youโre looking for.
*Hold the hug for as long as you like.
*Try stroking your upper arms in a soothing, gentle way.
*Connect with your breath, deep breaths in and out through your nose, feeling your chest expand and contract.
*Perhaps think of the loved one youโd like to be hugging, thinking how that would make you feel. Harness the gratitude of having them in your life, with the knowledge that the days weโll all be back hugging again are ahead.
