“Nurses should go back to the NHS.”

I’ve seen this said more than once.

Usually followed by the idea that the NHS is struggling because nurses are leaving to work in aesthetics.

But that’s not the reality.

The NHS has been under pressure for years.
Staff leaving is a symptom of that not the cause.

And I think there’s still an old mindset around nursing…
That it’s a vocation and we shouldn’t want more.

But like anyone else, we are allowed to want:

A better working environment
More balance
More time with our families
And yes, career progression

That shouldn’t be controversial.

I loved my role in the NHS.
But I also love what I do now and I’m proud of building something of my own.

In other professions, the right to move, grow or explore different paths is respected.

Nursing should be no different.

Leaving the NHS doesn’t mean we care less.
It doesn’t mean we’ve given up on patients.

For many of us, it means we’ve chosen a different way to use our skills, our knowledge and our experience.

And that should be respected too.
