Day 18 of 30: Altered Taste Sensation 🦷
Today’s Mouth Cancer Awareness Month symptom is altered taste sensation. A sudden or persistent change in the way food and drinks taste—whether it’s a metallic flavor, reduced sensitivity, or a complete loss of taste—can sometimes signal underlying health issues, including mouth cancer.
While changes in taste can also be caused by medications, infections, or lifestyle factors like smoking, long-lasting or unexplained alterations are worth paying attention to, especially if combined with other symptoms like pain, sores, or swelling.
Did you know?
Mouth cancer is more common than you might think, with over 8,000 new cases each year in the UK alone.
Poor diet, especially one low in fruits and vegetables, is linked to an increased risk of developing mouth cancer.
Only 50% of people survive mouth cancer for 5 years or more, but early detection can drastically improve these odds.
If you’ve noticed a persistent change in your taste that isn’t improving, consider speaking with a healthcare professional. Early detection saves lives—don’t hesitate to act!
