For a long time steroid injections were also used routinely to help the symptoms of tennis elbow, they work by reducing inflammation but also have an unwanted side effect of weakening tendons. Recent research has shown that while they can improve the symptoms of tennis elbow within the first 6 weeks, at 1 year after injection, pain returned and the patients treated with steroid injection were worse than those who weren’t treated at all.
