This week in clinic has been a gorgeous reminder of just how profound the ripple effects of reflexology can be šŸ¤

Often it’s only when we give ourselves permission to pause that we realise just how much we’ve been living in high alert (fight-flight), pushing through and holding on. Sometimes the gentle invitation to drift into our parasympathetic, where rest + repair happen, can help us to begin to restore balance. I’m also noticing that this is often the first step in us starting to take care of ourselves and making other changes in support of our health + wellness šŸ¤

I’m often asked how regularly reflexology sessions should be booked. My advice always depends on what has brought you to reflexology, your current health and wellness priorities (there is no one size fits all) but to help guide you here’s some suggestions and examples I sometimes sharešŸ‘‡šŸ½

🌱 if you’re managing an acute (diagnosed) issue/flare (where reflexology isn’t contra-indicated) or working on something specific (like preparation for surgery/other life events) try 1 session per week for up to 3 weeks then review or consider maintain
🌱 if you’re living with a chronic condition (including pain conditions) weekly or fortnightly for 4 to 6 sessions can be helpful before reviewing or moving toward maintainšŸ‘‡šŸ½
🌱 for more general nervous system support and ongoing wellness priorities monthly to every 8 weeks (maintain)
🌱 or if you’re simply wanting an hour to yourself, to deeply relax, pause and reset - book an individual session then see how you feel ✨

I’ve been enjoying reflexology for 10 years now and the beauty is that it consistently supports even as health, wellness and life priorities evolve. During my endometriosis diagnosis and lead up to my excision surgery I had more regular treatments which were invaluable for helping me navigate the anxiety and stress that accompanied this time for me.

When I discovered the jaw and pelvis are closely connected it made so much sense. The jaw clenching, teeth grinding and headaches had all become part of my pelvic pain and painful periods but I hadn’t realised there was a deep relationship connecting these symptoms via:

šŸ‘‰šŸ½ fascia - our deep frontal line of connective tissue runs from the jaw to the pelvic floor
šŸ‘‰šŸ½ nervous system and stress response - we store tension in the jaw and pelvis in our fight-flight stress response with the jaw and pelvic floor sharing a nerve pathway with the vagus nerve
šŸ‘‰šŸ½ the breath - the diaphragm, jaw and pelvic floor synchronise our breathing and shallow breath (which we often default to when we’re under stress, in chronic pain or in fight-flight mode) can lead to jaw and pelvic tightness.

This is why I often include gentle breathwork in my reflexology and coaching practice. Through my holistic practice I can help you focus on tension relief, nervous system support and vagus nerve activation. I can also connect you with other specialist input like pelvic physiotherapy for fully integrative and joined up recovery and relief, because everything is connected šŸ¤

Post meal walks, especially in the evening were my saviour when I started treating my SIBO last year. I’ve continued with them as there are so many helpful benefits that can be enjoyed by everyone šŸ¤

Just 2 minutes can be effective in supporting digestion, helping to regulate blood sugar, ease painful bloating ( ) and support energy levels and sleep. Gentle walking can also be supportive in managing chronic pain. It definitely helps my management of pelvic pain šŸ¤

If you’re lucky enough to catch a sunset it can also boost mood and further support our circadian rhythms and that all important sleep šŸ¤

Sometimes we can be holding on without being aware of how this is showing up in our bodies, like tension in our shoulders, neck, jaw or hips. This is something I often see with chronic pain conditions (including pelvic pain), as well as grief and emotional stress.

Reflexology can offer gentle support for letting go, whether physical, emotional or a combination of the two. Our emotional and physical bodies are so delicately intertwined and reflexology focuses on bringing a sense of balance for the mind and body.

This is the quiet work of reflexology and I’ll always share aftercare advice to help you feel supported, helping you to let go, so you can start to move forwards, find relief, feel lighter or whatever you are needing to feel more balanced and more like you again šŸ¤
