We are thinking of all the families and members of our sister club in New Zealand Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service that have been affected by this tragic event 💚🖤💛🖤
As our beloved maunga weeps and shivers and our community reels from yet another tragedy, our club is focused more than ever on keeping people safe on our beaches in upcoming days.
Our lifeguards have been responding throughout this week's weather event, called out to assist emergency services to help people from flood-stricken areas, and of course right here when the campground incident unfolded yesterday.
It has been traumatic and exhausting, not just for our members but for so many members of the emergency services and our wider community.
Many of you will know that we have evacuated our club buildings as a precaution and the club remains cordoned off. However, we have relocated core rescue equipment to a Portacom and a storage container further along the Main Beach, from which regional lifeguards will operate from today, and we will patrol from this weekend.
Given the sensitivity of the area around Mauao and the ongoing operations, we would encourage all beachgoers to head for the flagged area at Tay St, if possible.
There is still a decent swell hitting the coast today, and significant winds and currents forecast, so please don't swim alone, check with lifeguards before entering the water, and leave all inflatable beach toys at home.
We want to thank our neighbouring clubs for their support along the coast for once again stepping up to help, as well as Surf Life Saving New Zealand, the wider surf lifesaving community, and our supporters throughout the community.
Be kind and be safe and join with us in sharing as much aroha as possible with those affected or touched by recent events.
Your Lifeguards.
🖤💛
