No two jobs are ever the same in my role as a postnatal doula - I always strive to support each family in whatever ways are most useful to them.

With one of my current clients, I’m often found whipping up tasty, nutritious meals and treats in their kitchen, keeping the family well fuelled.

Highly recommend Jo Thompson- Infant Feeding Support for all things pumping related. Support available locally, in the comfort of your own home, and online.

🔥 Maximising your expressing & finding the right fl**ge

Pumping can be such a helpful tool, but it doesn’t always feel straightforward 🤍

If expressing feels uncomfortable, painful, or you’re not getting the output you expected or need, it might not be something you’re doing wrong… it could be your fl**ge fit or getting your pump and schedule just right.

I offer gentle, personalised support to help you:
✨ Feel more comfortable when pumping
✨ Find the right fl**ge size and fit for your body
✨ Understand how to maximise your expressing
✨ Make small changes that can have a big impact

Every body is different and your pumping experience should work for you 💫

No judgement. No pressure.
Just support that helps you feel more confident and comfortable 🤍

Have spent much of the day supporting a family as they prepare for the arrival for their baby, with much time devoted to a preparing to breastfeed session. Now this ‘suggestion’ is at the top of my Facebook feed… (stop listening, phone!)

Our dedicated Restrictive Lingual Frenulum (Tongue-tie) and Lactation Support Team provides essential care to babies struggling with breastfeeding.

Restrictive lingual frenulum can make feeding difficult or painful and, for many new mothers, timely treatment can mean the difference between stopping breastfeeding altogether and successfully continuing with exclusive breastfeeding.

Every year, the team supports 1,600–1,800 babies and their families - around 35 babies each week. Over 30% of our referrals are out of area, which includes referrals from Cambridge, King’s Lynn, Peterborough, Colchester and beyond. Tongue-tie procedures are carried out by one of our specialist midwives in restrictive lingual frenulum and lactation support or a paediatric surgeon.

The team includes specialist midwives Hannah Perrins and Jennifer Clark and paediatric and neonatal surgeons Shalini Singh and Khizer Mansoor, led by Ashish Minocha, Consultant Paediatric and Neonatal Surgeon. Hannah Male is the co-ordinator for the service.

Ashish said: “We are arguably the largest centre in the UK providing this service. Our model of care and clinical protocols are increasingly being adopted and replicated by other regional and national centres as benchmark standards.”

Alongside providing care, the team is deeply committed to education and skill-sharing.

Jenny said: “We regularly provide hands-on training to both nurses and doctors who are eager to develop their skills or pursuing a formal training programme. We run full-day training courses two or three times a year for those learning to assess and have recently launched an advanced course for those who have completed our RLF training day and are actively putting their learning into practice. These courses are heavily subscribed and attract professionals from across the region and beyond.”

Hannah Male says that the team consistently receives heartfelt feedback from grateful families.

One parent shared: “The nurse who carried out my daughter’s tongue-tie division listened to our concerns, showed genuine care and compassion, and was both knowledgeable and professional.”

Another said: “The doctor’s explanation, discussion and manner were very reassuring. The procedure was fast and not at all distressing.”

Khizer adds: “It’s truly commendable that the team continues to deliver high standards of care while also maintaining an exceptional level of parent satisfaction.”

Findings from a recent Cochrane review show that mothers who have skin-to-skin contact with their babies in the first hour after birth are more likely to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months of the baby’s life. Exclusive breastfeeding brings many health benefits for mothers, babies and health systems.

It’s been a whirlwind of activity here over the past few weeks.

❤️ Finishing up regular support sessions with a couple of clients (though I’ve seen one of them twice since, and have plans to see the other after half term)

🧡 Continuing with other ongoing postnatal clients - it’s wonderful to continue the journey alongside families, as their little ones get older

💛 Working in a shared care model with another gorgeous doula, providing sibling doula support for a first born child whilst their mamma was in labour and birthing a new addition to their family

💚 Working with families on antenatal sessions, planning for their new arrivals, including preparing for breastfeeding & breastfeeding considerations in birth preferences/ wish lists

💙 Infant feeding support 1:1s with families and their new arrivals

💜 Supporting at more NHS sessions than usual (as I put some of my other regular work commitments on pause for a month whilst on call)
