Feeling stressed? Science finds a simple way to take back control. 🧘🏻‍♀️

According to recent research from Penn State, feeling in control may be key to conquering daily stress.

The study found that people were 62% more likely to resolve everyday hassles on days when they felt a greater sense of personal control.

This link actually grew stronger over time, which suggests that we can get better at managing stress as we age.

The good news is that this sense of control is not a fixed trait.

Simple, practical actions like setting clear priorities...

Or reframing a difficult challenge can help boost that feeling of confidence.

By focusing on what is within our reach, we can reduce overall stress...

And support our long-term emotional wellbeing.

So tell me, what is one small thing you can take control of today to help ease your stress?

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

Have you ever told yourself, "I really should exercise..." 🏋🏻‍♂️
..But still found it difficult to start?

I want you to know that you are not alone in that feeling.

Even when we know exercise is good for us...

Our brain often prefers comfort over effort.

Our mind tends to avoid activities that feel demanding or uncomfortable...

It often chooses the easier rewards of scrolling or resting in the moment instead.

Thoughts like “I’m too tired" or “I’ll start tomorrow”...

Are often forms of avoidance rather than true barriers.

They reflect the brain’s tendency to prioritise short-term comfort over long-term wellbeing.

The good news: Small mindset shifts can help.

Reframing exercise as self-care rather than a chore helps lower the pressure.

Starting with just a few minutes of an activity you actually enjoy makes the goal feel achievable.

Sometimes the challenge isn’t knowledge, it’s the psychology behind motivation.

April has a way of inviting fresh starts…🌻☀️⠀

Lighter mornings, longer days, and a gentle sense of renewal.⠀

It’s the perfect time to reconnect with yourself!⠀

One of the key benefits of my Essential Relaxation Mini Toolkit is enhanced mindfulness.⠀

It helps you slow down, tune in, and strengthen your connection with the present moment.⠀

When life feels busy or overwhelming, it’s easy to drift onto autopilot. ⠀

These guided practices create space for deeper introspection, clearer thinking, and a calmer nervous system. ⠀

You’re not just relaxing, you’re learning to notice your thoughts and feelings without being swept away by them.⠀

Even a few mindful minutes can shift the tone of your whole day.⠀

If April feels like a month for resetting and grounding, this could be your gentle starting point!⠀

Happy Easter to you and your loved ones. 🐣

This season is often seen as a time of renewal, hope, and gentle new beginnings.

And sometimes, the most meaningful fresh start isn’t something big or dramatic…

It’s simply giving yourself permission to slow down, rest, and breathe a little deeper.

If today feels joyful, I hope you soak up every moment.

And if it feels quiet or reflective, that’s welcome too.

There’s space for all of it.

I’m wishing you peace, warmth, and a gentle sense of renewal.🙏

A single phrase can change the whole mood of your day!⠀

👉 Swap “I have to” with “I choose to” just once today.⠀

It’s a tiny shift, but a meaningful one.⠀

“I have to” can feel heavy, pressured, and out of your control.⠀

“I choose to” gently reminds your brain that you still have agency...⠀

Even in busy or difficult moments.⠀

This isn’t about pretending everything is easy.⠀

It’s about reclaiming a small sense of ownership over your actions, your time, and your energy.⠀

I often share micro habits like this because they’re simple enough to try...⠀

Even on low-energy days, yet powerful enough to change how you feel.⠀

Do you notice your mood dip when the skies turn grey or the wind howls? 🌨️🌤️

It’s something many people feel but rarely name.

In therapy, I often see how drizzle, darkness, or sudden weather shifts...

Can affect sleep, energy, and emotional balance.

Research shows these reactions are real and exist on a spectrum.

For some, rain feels soothing.

For others, it disrupts routines and makes emotional regulation harder.

The encouraging part is that small, gentle adjustments...

Such as pacing your schedule or adding uplifting activities indoors...

Can genuinely support your wellbeing even under gloomy skies.

I was recently quoted in Stylist and Apple News...📰

Talking about meteorosensitivity and the psychology of rubbish weather.

Inner critics sound convincing but they’re rarely accurate.

You know that voice, the one that pipes up just as you’re about to try something new? 💬

The one that says “Don’t mess this up” or “Who do you think you are?”

Very persuasive. Very loud. And very often… wrong.

I always remind people: that voice isn’t telling the truth, it’s telling a story.🗣️

Usually a fear-based one. It’s trying to keep you safe but it uses anxiety instead of facts.

Here’s a tiny shift that can help in seconds:
Instead of arguing with the thought, just notice it.

“Ah, there’s my inner critic again.” Breathe. Let it be there without letting it drive.

You don’t need to silence it. You just don’t need to obey it either.

Creating these small moments of space can help you feel calmer and more grounded.

This approach helps you stay in charge even on messy or imperfect days.

If you’d like help practising this pause, my Safe Place Visualisation offers grounding exercises to calm the nervous system when emotions run high.

Did you know? According to research, almost 1 in 3 students feel lonely all or most of the time. 🎓

If that feels familiar, I want you to know, you’re not alone.

Loneliness isn’t just about being ‘alone’; it can show up in many different ways.

It’s often shaped by academic pressure, social comparison, moving away from home...

Financial stress, and feeling like everyone else is coping better.

When we ignore that feeling, this loneliness can fuel anxiety, low mood, and sleep problems.

Remember this: You don’t have to feel “broken” to deserve support.

Wellbeing isn't always a massive life overhaul.

Sometimes, it’s just about reclaiming small moments of calm to reset your system.

This University Mental Health Day, if things feel overwhelming...

I’d love for you to try Safe Place Visualisation.

It’s a gentle, guided exercise to help settle the nervous system.

And build a sense of inner safety when the world feels like too much.

Loneliness thrives in silence but relief often starts with one small pause. 🍃

Feeling like the workday never stops, the inbox overflows, and weekends don’t bring rest?

If you’re in a high-pressure role, watch out for these early signs of burnout, anxiety, or depression:

- Persistent insomnia or restless sleep
- Chronic fatigue, even after a break
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
- Feeling emotionally numb or unusually irritable

While these signs often start subtly, they are important signals from the mind and body.

If they are not addressed, these feelings can significantly impact your long-term health and clarity.

I believe that recognising these signs is the first step toward reclaiming a sense of balance.

If this resonates, join Strategic Psychological Coaching, invest in your wellbeing and lead at your best.

Ever feel so busy or drained that even “self-care” feels like too much?

Here’s a micro habit that works even on your lowest-energy days:

👉 Sit with your feet flat on the floor and take 3 slow breaths.

That’s it. No apps. No equipment. No perfect mindset required.

Grounded feet and slower breath signal safety to your nervous system.

I often remind people (and myself!) that this tiny pause...

Can interrupt stress spirals, reduce anxiety, and gently bring you back into your body.✨

You don’t need to feel calm before you do it. Calm often comes after.

And even if it doesn’t, you’ve still given your mind and body a moment of care.

Small actions, repeated gently, add up.

Parents, ever notice your child suddenly “forget” how to speak when the teacher calls on them…

Or skip lunch because everyone might be watching? 👀

That’s often how social anxiety disorder shows up in children.

It’s more than shyness, it might be an intense fear of being judged or making a mistake.

- Children may avoid raising their hand or feel panic when attention turns their way.

- You might also notice tummy aches, a racing heart, or exhaustion.

I want to reassure you that your child is not being dramatic.

They are simply doing their best to manage a very loud internal worry. 💛

I believe that with the right understanding, these feelings can become more manageable.

My Calm Horizons Workshop helps adults better understand and respond to child anxiety.
