Good sleep is one of the most powerful foundations for mental health. When we sleep well, the brain processes emotional experiences, consolidates memory, and helps us think more clearly.

But when sleep is disrupted, especially REM sleep, it can make it harder to manage emotions and even increase the risk of anxiety, depression, and other mental health difficulties.

The takeaway? Protecting your sleep isn’t a luxury, it’s an essential part of caring for your mind.

One of the most common questions I hear is: “How long will EMDR therapy take to work?” The honest answer is: it depends.

EMDR helps the brain to reprocess traumatic experiences so they no longer feel overwhelming. For some people, the shift can happen surprisingly quickly. For others, it may take several sessions before they start to notice real change.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all timeline, because every person’s experience of trauma and recovery is different.

I explained this in more detail on my blog, which you can read through the link in my bio.

Our bodies respond to stress in ways that go far deeper than we realise, right down to the level of our cells. Recent research has shown that lysosomes (the part of the cell that acts like a recycling centre) can become “bloated” when under stress.

Why does this matter? Because when lysosomes stop working well, it’s been linked to ageing and certain diseases. The encouraging news is that scientists are now finding new ways to block this bloating effect, which could help in future treatments.

It’s another reminder that stress management isn’t just about how we feel in the moment, it also has ripple effects throughout the body.

Looking after your mental health doesn’t always mean making big, dramatic changes. Often it’s the small, everyday shifts that have the biggest impact.

With just a few minutes to pause, breathe, or ground yourself, you can reduce stress and feel more connected, wherever you are. These simple tools are rooted in psychological principles, and I’ve seen how powerful they can be in everyday life.
I shared more about this in my blog, and you can read through the link in our bio.

Are you someone who feels things deeply? Research suggests that highly sensitive people may be more vulnerable to anxiety and depression, but the same sensitivity can also mean they respond especially well to therapy.

A review of 33 studies found that understanding sensitivity could help clinicians tailor treatment more effectively, whether that’s talking therapies, group work, or medication. It’s a reminder that what feels like a challenge in one area can also be a strength in another.

What do you think - does sensitivity feel like both a burden and a gift at times?

Forgiveness can be a complicated idea, especially when the pain runs deep. It doesn’t mean forgetting what happened, or pretending the hurt didn’t matter.
Sometimes, the focus isn’t on forgiving the other person at all, but on letting go for your own peace of mind. Releasing the weight of anger or resentment can be one of the most powerful forms of self-care.
I explored this in more detail on my blog, which you can read through the link in our bio:

You’ve probably heard the phrase “toxic positivity” but what does it actually mean? Earlier this year I explained in the Daily Mail why phrases like “think positive” or “it could be worse” can sometimes do more harm than good.

When we treat negative emotions as unacceptable, people can end up feeling ashamed of what they’re going through, rather than supported. Real wellbeing comes from acknowledging the full range of feelings, not brushing them aside.
