Ely Air Cadets Support the Poppy Appeal and Bring Remembrance to Care Home Residents
Cadets from 1094 (Ely) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets have been busy across the City of Ely supporting the Royal British Legionโs Poppy Appeal โ raising vital funds to assist serving and former members of the Armed Forces and their families.
As part of their Remembrance activities, a group of cadets and staff took time away from their fundraising duties to visit Heathlands House Care Home in Cambridge for an afternoon of conversation, tea, and cakes with the residents.
The visit offered an opportunity for cadets to listen to the residentsโ stories, many of which reflected first-hand experiences and memories of military service, wartime life, and community spirit. The event was warmly received by residents and staff alike, with cadets showing great respect, compassion, and curiosity throughout.
The visit was led by Civilian Instructor Saoirse McNeil, who said:
> โOur cadets gain so much from speaking with older generations โ hearing their memories and experiences helps keep history alive and connects them deeply with the meaning of Remembrance. Itโs a privilege to share time with people who have lived through so much and who embody the very values we strive to uphold as Air Cadets.โ
The ethos of Heathlands House Care Home centres on community, dignity, and meaningful connection, providing residents with enriching experiences that celebrate their lives and memories. Likewise, the RAF Air Cadets uphold the RISE values โ Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence โ which were clearly demonstrated throughout the visit.
The event served as a poignant reminder that Remembrance is not only about wearing a poppy, but also about listening, learning, and honouring those whose stories continue to inspire the next generation.
