There’s an article online at the moment that is promoting the idea of the ‘best’ formula milk for your baby. It’s basically an advertising piece and includes some of the most expensive formulas suggesting they are better for your baby.

I’m not going to link to it (and am 😵‍💫 it’s been published under advertising laws) but wanted to remind anyone who is worried that they can’t afford the ‘best’ formula for their baby or is feeling pressure to afford it, that there’s simply no evidence that more expensive milks are better for your baby.

All infant formulas suitable from 0 - 12 months are nutritionally equivalent and there’s no evidence that any provide better nutrition or outcomes compared to the others. They are all regulated to have very similar ingredients and the ones on sale for £9 (or whatever the lowest price is this week) will support your baby in the same way that the ones double the price will.

When you look at the ingredients list of different priced formulas they are very similar. The companies openly admit in published research to targeting different worries in their advertising of their products ie making parents think that some milks are more scientific and developed than others even though they know that this isn’t true.

Please buy whatever milk suits your budget, is most most easily available or even suits your kitchen colour scheme - which is more relevant than any advertising claims are!

It's going to get HOT 😅☀️

This is a brilliant article with lots of tips.

Remember :
Keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm. When outside, use sunscreen regularly, and wear hat and sunglasses.

Keep your house cool by opening everything at night, and closing everything - windows, doors and blinds during the day.

Use a fan in front of a bucket of ice to create cool air.

Drink, drink, drink, and drink some more.

If you are pregnant, make sure to wear loose clothing and elevate your ankles regularly to avoid swelling.

If you're breastfeeding, offer the breast on demand. Babies under 6 months do not need extra water.

Use a muslin as a baby blanket, not a duvet. If it's very hot, you can get it a bit damp.

If you're out and about, do not cover the pram with a muslin or cloth : this will stop the air from circulating and lead to dangerous overheating.

Take regular cool showers during the day - babies should not take cold baths or showers in hot weather, so keep the water tepid.

Keep toddlers cool by doing water play, ice play, using a paddling pool, etc.

Keep calm and keep cool ❤

Babies are born with only one power; to elicit the emotion of tenderness and a caring response from their parents, especially and specifically from their mothers. Why? Because their survival depends on it.

All human babies are born prematurely relative to other mammals; perhaps by as much as 9-18 months. Many hypothesize that Mother Nature designed us this way to accommodate two things: the ability to walk upright and the luxury of a large adult brain. To enable upright motion, the pelvis needed to shrink significantly, reducing the diameter of the birth canal. For babies to be born safely, they needed to be born at an earlier stage of development meaning a newborn’s brain is a mere 25% of their adult size. In the first 3 years their brains triple in size reaching almost 80% of their eventual adult size.

Scientists have found animals born into hostile environments tend to have larger brains at birth to help them survive. Zebras, for example, need to be able to keep up with the herd just hours after birth; their relatively mature infant brain helps them respond appropriately when a lion appears.

Nature always have a survival strategy in place. So, what is the survival strategy for human babies born with such tiny brains? The answer is simple - it's us, their parents.

Babies are biologically designed to form secure attachments for good reason. John Bowlby, Founder of Attachment Theory, hypothesized healthy attachment is crucial to promote emotional regulation and optimal brain development.

The brain doesn’t fully mature until our mid-late 20’s. So, what does this mean for us as parents? It means we need to be responsive, patient, compassionate and flexible with our kids. The way we choose to communicate with our children - positive or negative - affects the way their brains grow. This realization brings intense responsibility, which is simultaneously terrifying and exciting. If we can give our kids the experiences they need we’ll quite literally be designing a brain that will help ensure their future happiness & success.

THEY SAY NINE MONTHS ON NINE MONTHS OFF

Except the baby is right here
breathing in my arms.
My body is just a whole different body
ligaments longer, softer
stretched by 40%, my doctor said,
ruined.
He is young, about to have a baby of his own.
I don't tell him
bodies are not ruined
by this blooming.
People comment on the baby weight
again, coming off
And I think of the baby strapped to my chest
the springtime sun right here in arms
breathing miraculous ragged breaths
and how the midwife said you are a good mammal.
I know a woman who has heartburn
from pregnancy, years after her son's birth.
She said they change you forever and labor—
it's just one day of your life.
How I clung to that in the silvery unreal
hours of the morning, walked
through contractions
until my legs unhinged
I sat on the sidewalk,
groaning. We are made
to change like water, conduit
and rushes, cycles and waves.
The baby, she is right here
a whole ocean—
and they worry
about the weight.
