Improved access to research and clinical trials is one of the many benefits that the planned Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital, set to be built on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, will bring regionally, nationally and globally.

By bringing together the clinical excellence of Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the scientific expertise of the University of Cambridge under one roof, the specialist facility will accelerate the translation of new cancer innovations into cutting-edge patient care.

An early-stage trial at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, aims to improve treatment for people with late-stage pancreatic cancer, a challenging cancer that is often diagnosed late, when few treatment options are available.

Fantastic news that a pioneering Channel 4 programme presented by Davina McCall will be broadcast live from Addenbrooke’s Hospital, as part of this year’s Stand Up To Cancer UK 2025.

It will highlight the expertise, innovation and dedication of clinicians in Cambridge, as 'Cancer Clinic: Live' broadcasts from a special one-off cancer clinic on the evening of Friday 12th December.

For the first time on UK television, viewers will see clinical consultations with cancer specialists from Addenbrooke’s and Royal Papworth Hospitals unfold in real time. Viewers will hear from patients and their families whose cancer journeys have been followed for several weeks from diagnosis to results, as they continue through treatment.

The Cambridge Biomedical Campus is home to the largest life sciences cluster in Europe. It is also the site for the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital, which will bring together academia, industry and clinical excellence under one roof, to transform the way cancer is diagnosed and treated.

Have you ever played Top Trumps? We're creating our own set, to highlight the fantastic work of the people behind Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital.

Fiona is Co-Chair of our Patient Advisory Group, and initially got involved as a patient representative in 2012, first at Addenbrooke’s, but then at a regional and national level.

"I turned 60 in 2021 – a big milestone, and not one I’d expected to reach. In 2003, after my first secondary, I don’t think anybody would’ve predicted that I’d be here, and in good nick. Yet, here I am.”

🏆We're delighted to report that a film featuring breast cancer specialists at Addenbrooke’s Hospital has won an award!🏆

The film, Shades of Survival, won the Cambridge Film Festival 2025 Audience Award for the Best Documentary Feature!

Professor Charlotte Coles, Professor Jean Abraham and Ms Georgette Oni from Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were all featured in the film about global inequalities in breast cancer care for Black women.

Congrats to all those involved for highlighting such an important topic.

Congratulations to the Shades of Survival team for winning the Cambridge Film Festival 2025 Audience Award for the Best Documentary Feature!

"I’m so excited about the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital — it will move us rapidly towards a world where we can prevent and cure cancer."

Dr Sarah Burge (Director of Clinical Integration) writes for The Cambridge Perspective — the CUH thought leadership series — on how Cambridge is leading a transformative approach to cancer care by integrating cutting-edge research with clinical practice.

She discusses how the upcoming Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital will unite scientists and clinicians under one roof, fostering breakthroughs and training future pioneers. This integrated model not only improves patient outcomes but also strengthens the UK’s position as a global leader in cancer research and healthcare innovation.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust delivered the first histotripsy liver cancer treatment to an NHS patient in Europe, outside of a clinical trial.

The non-invasive procedure uses ultrasound energy to target and destroy tumours more precisely, with less time spent in hospital and faster recovery times.

This pioneering treatment underpins the approach to care at the planned Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital, set to be built on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

"Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital challenges the stereotype of hospitals being intimidating places, by reimagining the patient experience from the moment of arrival until discharge and beyond, offering care and support locally and in patients' homes where possible."

Our architects NBBJ write in the Health Estate Journal and discuss the design of Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital, including how stakeholder engagement has shaped the plans and prioritised the patient experience. Read from 151-153: https://orlo.uk/2uTqi

Is a tumour's ability to evolve and adapt over time linked to why it becomes resistant to radiotherapy? And if so, what can we do to overcome this radioresistance?

In this episode, Dr Christopher Jones and Dr Ashley Nicholls from CRUK RadNet Cambridge at the University of Cambridge explore these questions. They explain why some tumours are resistant to radiation and why some patients are more resistant to treatment than others. They also offer insights into why recurrence happens and how to identify it early in order to treat it more effectively with new technologies.

Excellent to see Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust become the first in Europe to deliver a new liver cancer treatment to a patient outside of a clinical trial.

Histotripsy uses focussed ultrasound energy to destroy targeted tumour tissues, without the need for surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.

With treatment taking as little as 30 minutes and usually with minimal or no pain, patients can recover quickly and spend less time in hospital, with treatment performed as a day case.

Understanding how we can treat cancer more precisely will be at the forefront of care in our planned Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital.

"Waiting to find out if you have cancer can be incredibly worrying. The fact that I could have a biopsy, receive a diagnosis and talk through treatment options with my doctor there and then, all on the same day, made such a difference."

In a UK first, a one-stop kidney cancer clinic at Addenbrooke’s Hospital is pioneering an ultra-fast way of diagnosing cancer, which is cutting waiting times for patients by a month.

Ken Pottle, visited the one-stop clinic in March. Following a biopsy and diagnosis of cancer, he opted for thermal ablation, a treatment that uses heat to destroy tumours. Following treatment in April, he was given the all-clear a couple of weeks ago.

The kidney clinic was influenced by work underway on service improvement and transformation as part of the development plans for Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital. The planned hospital will bring together clinical excellence and world-leading research under one roof, accelerating new innovations to help detect cancer earlier, meaning better outcomes for patients.
