The journey to understanding Parkinson's spans 200 years.

Here's how far we've come 👇

1817: James Parkinson publishes An Essay on the Shaking Palsy.

1867-1880s: French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot adds to the clinical description and proposes the name "Parkinson's disease".

1919: Konstantin Tretiakoff identifies the substantia nigra as the damaged part of the brain.

1958-1960: Arvid Carlsson discovers that dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain and that its deficiency leads to parkinsonian symptoms.

1967: George Cotzais develops effective levodopa (L-dopa) treatment..

1987: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is introduced as a surgical treatment for severe cases.

1997: The alpha-synuclein protein is linked to the genetic form of Parkinson’s, explaining the composition of Lewy bodies (cellular damage).

2000-Present: Advances in genetic research (e.g., LRRK2, PRKN genes) and ongoing research into neuroprotective therapies

2016: Charco Neurotech was founded and began developing the CUE1 device, with and for people with Parkinson’s, to improve their quality of life.

James Parkinson
1755 to 1824
English surgeon, apothecary, geologist, paleontologist and political activist.

In 1817, James Parkinson published "An Essay on the Shaking Palsy," which provided the first comprehensive description of the condition now known as Parkinson's disease. It was a 66-page essay describing six patients with a mysterious "shaking palsy". In the paper he distinguished between resting tremors and the tremors with motion.

🌷The red tulip is the international symbol of Parkinson's 🌷

The red tulip was formally adopted as the worldwide symbol of Parkinson's disease on April 11, 2005, at the 9th World Parkinson's Disease Day Conference. It represents hope, resilience, the need for further research and the "colourful" awareness of the disease.

In honour of this, we would love you to post a photo of a red tulip (real or drawn) with a message of support. You can do this in the comments section below or by emailing the team (info@charconeurotech.com).

We look forward to receiving your tulips! 🌷

Tomorrow marks the beginning of April and the start of World Parkinson's Awareness Month. The message for World Parkinson's Day 2026 is “bridge the care gap”. The message is simple - provide better support for people with Parkinson's!

There are many ways you can get involved from signing the Parkinson's Europe pledge to crocheting a tulip! You can find out more information about the campaign by following the links below to the Parkinson's UK and dedicated pages.

📖 Understanding ‘Cueing’ in Parkinson's treatment.

‘Cueing’ is a therapy recommended by medical professionals to aid people with Parkinson's in managing their motor symptoms. Cueing can come in various forms, such as the sound of a metronome, spaced floor lines, or internal counting.

In the case of the CUE1, the rhythmic pulsing of vibrations provides the cueing. You may find it helpful to concentrate on the rhythm of the pulses in coordinating your movements.

For people with Parkinson’s, the benefits of cueing include:
🔸 Reduction in freeze-of-gait episodes
🔸 Improved and more robust rhythm while walking
🔸 Enhanced overall movement smoothness
