CERVICAL SCREENING (SMEAR TESTS) UPDATE

Cervical screening, which used to be caused a smear test, is a test to check the health of the cervix and help prevent cervical cancer.

This test is offered to people with a cervix aged 25 to 64.

Previously, smear test results were all sent by post. However, negative test results will now be sent via the NHS app. If the message sent remains unread for 72 hours, a letter will subsequently be sent.

Abnormal results will continue to be delivered by post.

For further information on cervical screening please go to https://www.nhs.uk/tests-and-treatments/cervical-screening/what-is-cervical-screening/

As we head into the Bank holiday weekend, don’t forget you can treat many minor illnesses at home with a well-stocked medicine cabinet. Colds and coughs, sore throats, and upset stomachs can all be treated by having a supply of health care essentials such as pain relief (paracetamol / ibuprofen), cough and sore throat remedies, a first aid kit, upset stomach treatment, rehydration treatment and heartburn / indigestion treatment.

Your local pharmacy can give expert advice on minor illnesses such as headaches and upset stomachs, bites and stings.

NHS111 can give you non-emergency help if you are feeling unwell, unsure or anxious. You can ring them on 111 or find them online https://111.nhs.uk/

Remember that 999 and A&E are for emergencies only, such as choking, chest pain, blacking out or serious blood loss.

Have fun and stay safe!

Next weekend is a bank holiday weekend which means it's time to check if you have enough medication to cover the 3 days.

Ordering a repeat prescription is easier than ever. Most people can order their medication via the NHS App, or online through their GP practice website. People who can’t or would prefer not to order their prescription online can get their order placed by contacting their GP practice directly.

Sati Ubhi, Chief Pharmacist with NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, said: “Be sure to plan ahead by checking now if you have enough medication to last over the bank holiday weekend and requesting more if needed.”

“Running out of your prescribed medication can be very stressful over a bank holiday weekend when services are not running normally and can also cause additional work for pharmacies and NHS 111 which are already under pressure, especially during a bank holiday weekend.”

Place any orders now so you can ensure you have enough medication to last you.

A heat health alert is due to come into force for all of England this morning, with potential highs of 34C as another spell of hot weather hits the UK.

Hot weather could have an impact on the more vulnerable, such as older people (especially those over 75 and female), those who live on their own or in a care home, those who have serious or longer term illnesses, those who are on multiple medicines, and those who find it hard to keep cool, such as babies and the bed bound.

Tips for coping in the hot weather include wearing sun screen, a hat and light clothes, having cold food and drinks and avoiding alcohol. Keep your living space cool by closing windows and curtains in the day and opening them at night when the temperature drops.

For further information on how to cope in the hot weather please visit NHS UK http://www.nhs.uk/.../heatwave-how-to-cope-in-hot-weather/

Heat exhaustion does not usually need medical help if you can cool down within 30 minutes. If it turns into heatstroke, it needs to be treated as an emergency.

Symptoms of both conditions and how to treat for them can be found at www.nhs.uk/conditions/heat-exhaustion-heatstroke

Please check in on any family, friends or neighbours who may be susceptible to these higher temperatures.

It’s that time of year again already! If you book your flu vaccine with us, we can also check that you are up to date with all of the other vaccines you may be eligible for.

The flu vaccination programme starts in October for all eligible adults, except pregnant women and children, who will be offered the vaccination from late September. Pregnant women are vaccinated to protect both mum and baby in first few weeks of life. Children get flu earlier than adults as they are “super spreaders”.

This year we are also giving the Covid-19 vaccination at the same time as the flu, if you are eligible.

For eligibility criteria and clinic dates please visit our website https://www.grantamedicalpractices.co.uk/

For further information about the flu vaccination please go to the NHS UK website.

To book your flu vaccination please call 0300 234 5555 and choose the Granta site of your choice or wait to receive your SMS link via your mobile phone to book your appointment.

Our Story

Our vision is to develop Granta into the single hub for all the healthcare needs of our patients. We want to guarantee that, whatever their needs and the social or healthcare setting they are in at the time, our patients will always have the support and care that they need from our team. We want to take on full responsibility for working with our practice population to promote health when they are well and to deliver the care needed when they fall ill. We would like to see Granta staff take pride in delivering a standard of care to our patients that they expect for themselves and their families.
