Yellow heat health alerts are now in force with temperatures expected to hit 34C (93F) in parts of the UK with this weekend.

The alerts, issued by the UK Health Security Agency, include the East of England and are valid until next Tuesday 15th July.

They warn that the hot weather could have an impact on the more vulnerable, such as older people (especially those over 75 and female), those who live on their own or in a care home, those who have serious or longer term illnesses, those who are on multiple medicines, and those who find it hard to keep cool such as babies and the bed bound.

Tips for coping in the hot weather include wearing sun screen, a hat and light clothes, having cold food and drinks and avoiding alcohol. Keep your living space cool by closing windows and curtains in the day and opening them at night when the temperature drops.

For further information on how to cope in the hot weather please visit NHS UK www.nhs.uk/live-well/seasonal-health/heatwave-how-to-cope-in-hot-weather/

Heat exhaustion does not usually need medical help if you can cool down within 30 minutes. If it turns into heatstroke, it needs to be treated as an emergency.

Symptoms of both conditions and how to treat for them can be found at www.nhs.uk/conditions/heat-exhaustion-heatstroke

Please check in on any family, friends or neighbours who may be susceptible to these higher temperatures.

As we head into the warmest weekend of the year so far, here are some tips for preventing heat exhaustion and heatstroke:

• drink more cold drinks, especially if you're active or exercising
• wear light-coloured, loose clothing
• avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm
• avoid excess alcohol
• avoid extreme exercise
• if you're inside on a very hot day, close curtains, close windows if it's hotter outside than in your home and turn off electrical equipment and lights that get hot

This will also prevent dehydration and help your body keep itself cool.

Children, older people and people with long-term health conditions (such as diabetes or heart problems) are more at risk of heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

For further information about symptoms and how to cool down go to https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/heat-exhaustion-heatstroke/

HEATWAVES: WHO’S MOST AT RISK?

A heatwave can affect anyone, but the most vulnerable people are:-

• older people – especially those over 75 and female;

• those who live on their own or in a care home;

• people who have serious or long-term illness, including heart or lung conditions, diabetes, kidney disease, Parkinson’s disease, or some mental health conditions;

• people who are on multiple medicines that may make them more likely to be badly affected by hot weather;

• those who may find it hard to keep cool – babies and the very young, the bed bound, those with drug or alcohol additions or with Alzheimer’s disease;

• people who spend a lot of time outside or in hot places – those who live in a top-floor flat, the homeless or those whose jobs are outside.

If you know someone who is susceptible to hot weather, check in on them to make sure they are staying cool and drinking plenty of water. If you think they may have heat exhaustion and are struggling call 111 or get help from 111 online.

For tips for coping in hot weather, signs of heat-related illness and when to get help go to https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/seasonal-health/heatwave-how-to-cope-in-hot-weather/

Our vision is to develop Granta into the single hub for all the healthcare needs of our patients. We want to guarantee that, whatever their needs and the social or healthcare setting they are in at the time, our patients will always have the support and care that they need from our team. We want to take on full responsibility for working with our practice population to promote health when they are well and to deliver the care needed when they fall ill. We would like to see Granta staff take pride in delivering a standard of care to our patients that they expect for themselves and their families.
