Samantha Draxler - Consultant SLT

Samantha Draxler - Consultant SLT Speech and Language Therapist helping children with speech, language and communication difficulties I was on the Board of Directors of ASLTIP from 2015-2017.

ABOUT ME:
I am a Consultant Speech and Language Therapist and registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, registered member of the Health and Care Professionals Council and Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice. Since qualifying as a Speech & Language Therapist in 2007 I have worked in mainstream schools, special schools and community clinics as well as developing a pre-referral Partnership Early Years Service for the NHS. SPECIALISM:
My clinical specialism is Autism Spectrum Conditions. After becoming increasingly disheartened working for public services, in 2009 I launched Coordinated Therapy Services (CTS) and developed an independent service provision for children and young people with speech and language difficulties and implemented this approach across Essex and Cambridgeshire. In 2009, companies that provided independent speech and language therapy were few and far between. My dream was to ensure speech and language therapy was delivered when and where the children needed it in a way that facilitated positive long-lasting outcomes for our clients and the educational settings they attended. CTS was a pioneer in this approach and provided services to over 30 schools employing 20 speech and language therapists and occupational therapists. Although the therapists are now employed by an alternative provider, they continue to work to support children in the classrooms alongside teaching teams in a truly multi-disciplinary manner. I am in the fortunate position of working alongside some of my previous employees for clinical supervision and am extremely proud of how they work every day with the same vision. I am also commissioned by other practices from multiple disciplines to work with them strategically in developing their service pathways, most notably those working alongside and/or within Education and the NHS. QUALIFICATIONS:
My post-graduate qualifications include ADOS, ADI-r, SCERTS, COMFOR, SOS Feeding, PECS, TEACCH, VERVE. I have a post-graduate qualification in Clinical Supervision and also have Expert Witness training from Bond Solon. I am an Associate Expert Witness for Bush and Company, instructed by solicitors all over the UK to assess on behalf of claimants and defendants. I also provide services to families and clinics overseas, remotely and face to face. MY PASSION:
For me, the needs of children I have had the pleasure of working with have always been my priority. I now spend my clinical working week with a small caseload of clients I see for regular therapy, running ASC diagnostic clinics alongside colleagues and undertaking a considerable amount of Expert Witness assessments and attending Educational Tribunals. When I am not at work you will mostly find me spending time with my family and animals on our family farm. In the future, my aim is to merge my passion for Autism, Speech and Language Therapy, children and animals to create a unique therapy experience for families.

This touched me.
I see people avoid me.
In the street. In the shops.
They don't know what to say.
They don't know how to react to me or my child. Remember a smile and a 'hello' cost nothing

We learn best in different ways. It's important to explore learning styles so that we can teach in a way that suits your child best.

Learning doesn't have to be inside the classroom, it can be outside in the garden, at home or on a walk.
We need to think about engaging all of our senses and make it part of our child's learning.

Today may have been a tough day for you. You notice your child isn't happy coming home from school. Their book says they've had a 'red' kind of day. This will have meant a day of challenging behaviour and frustration for them. But you always know tomorrow is a new day and just maybe, a 'green' kind of day. A day of positivity!

I'm so lucky to receive such kind words. My job is often challenging and rewarding in equal measure. I often think about my clients before the session begins, and after the session ends. A client is always within a therapist's mind. It's the nature of my job!

It's OK to be silent, we don't have to fill every moment of silence. In fact, it can support children and young people in many ways, to process information, it gives them time to formulate a response to the situation and it helps them to focus.

❓ Did you know it can take up to 10 seconds of silence for a person with language difficulties to process information?

👉 Try timing 10 seconds and staying silent, you'll be surprised by how long it actually is.

We talk about children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities masking and often their behaviour changes when they are in a place where they feel safe.
But have you ever thought about how you as parents and carers might mask? When you are in a place of safety such as your home with someone you trust you can let out your frustrations and talk about your fears. But in front of your child, you may mask and your worries and fears may stay hidden.

I am always here for you, to listen, for you to feel heard and for impartial advice about your child's communication.

We need others to understand that every individual with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities is different. They may have the same diagnosis, but their needs, wants and goals will be different.

Each client goes on their own unique journey. We cannot fit young people with diagnoses into boxes, and nor should we.

We need a differentiated assessment and treatment plan and be dynamic enough so that everyone can fulfil their potential.

There's no right or wrong way to feel after your child or young person has received a diagnosis. You may go through many of these feelings and that's OK too!

I want you to know receiving a diagnosis does not change who your child is, it doesn't change their strengths but what it will do is give them the support they need to reach their goals and to support their needs.
