The stages of sleep
People spend about a third of their lives sleeping, yet many know little about it. With the rise of sleep tracking apps, there's a growing interest in the 'stages' of sleep and the impact they have on our wellbeing the next day.
It is important to note that it's normal to have two or three periods of wakefulness during the night.
Non-REM sleep has three stages:
-Stage 1 is the initial phase when the person falls asleep and is still easy to wake up.
-Stage 2 is characterized by light sleep, during which your heart rate and breathing are regulated and your body temperature drops.
-Stage 3 is the deepest sleep period. During this stage, there is physical recovery, release of growth hormones, and strengthening of the immune and cardiovascular systems.
REM sleep is not considered a restorative stage of sleep, as it is associated with dreaming. However, your brain becomes more active by helping you to form memories and you get mental recovery.
We have more deep sleep at the beginning of the night and more REM sleep at the end of the night. This is why it is important to treat sleep disorders throughout the whole night.
