What my ‘bad skin days’ used to look like on the right vs. What my ‘bad skin days’ look like now on the left.
As an acne girly I have tried EVERYTHING to manage or cure my acne. I’ve taken Isotretinoin / Roaccutabe, courses of tetracycline antibiotics, Used Epiduo, Duac, Tretinoin, used Cicaplast balm all over my face, Sudocrem, toothpaste, peeled my skin to within a millimetre of its life and tried every clay mask promising to shrink spots overnight.
That’s not even thinking about cleaning my makeup brushes religiously, silk pillows and letting my face ‘breathe’.
What I have learnt the most so far about managing my skin and what I put on my face:
- Not all products advertised as non-comedogenic are in-fact non-comedogenic. Shea butters and oils are still often found in these products which are a sure way to trigger congested skin. 🧈
- Less is more! Over exfoliating, or trying to get through that retinol purge is simply drying out skin, which will in turn - create more sebum production. Focusing on repairing the skin barrier is key 🔑
- Gut health and diet matters! I definitely notice an increase in breakouts when I’ve drank five coffees and no water, alongside a diet of carbs for a week. ☕️
- Stress, hormones and environmental factors all play a part in skin function. You truly do glow differently when you’re happy 🧖♀️
- Multi-modality is best. Instead of putting all my faith in one product, utilising multiple sources of prevention and skincare such as LED light therapy, diet changes, light peels and collagen drinks has been a game changer for me. 🤍
