Since today marks the start of , we want to share a few of the ways that disabled people access products and content online, and how they are used.
When we think about how we can make getting online easier for everyone, keeping these technologies and methods in mind can help ensure that content is more accessible, and that we appreciate that different technologies are used to accommodate different disabilities. Not everyone will use or need the same type of technology, and a different method may be needed to support different online users.
Screen readers: These are an assistive technology that can change text and graphics into audio speech. They can help with navigation online by allowing touch to browse web pages or by
enabling keyboard commands.
Easy-read formats: These are documents or versions of information that simplify content into short, clear sentences, accompanied by images.
Video captions: These sit below audio or video content, providing a text version of spoken words and sometimes non-dialogue audio, such as descriptions of sounds or music.
Keyboard tabbing: This makes use of a keyboard’s tab key to cycle through elements of a web page without using a mouse.
