This year, Alcohol Awareness Week in the UK is 7th-13th July. 🍺🍻🍾🥂🍸🍹
Why are we interested in this, as a physiotherapy clinic 🤷♀️?
The effects of alcohol on our liver or heart are well publicised, but did you know that it also impacts your bones, muscles, joints and nerves?
Understanding these effects can help you make informed choices about your alcohol consumption and overall health. Plus, when alcohol makes it hard for us to think clearly, we might not be as careful as we should be, leading up to more chances of getting muscle and joint injuries🤕!
Alcohol's effects on the musculoskeletal system can range from mild, temporary discomfort to severe, chronic conditions. These effects can include muscle weakness and wasting, increased risk of bone fractures, and potential exacerbation of joint pain, particularly in individuals with pre-existing conditions like osteoarthritis.
While low to moderate alcohol consumption might not significantly affect your musculoskeletal system, excessive or long-term alcohol misuse can lead to serious health problems and is known to be linked to over 40 medical conditions.
Being mindful of your drinking habits, and watching our for those around you, can help you maintain a healthy musculoskeletal system and overall well-being
