SJM Osteopathy

SJM Osteopathy Registered Osteopath providing osteopathic treatment for all ages, and sports massage.

Saffron-Jade McCormack graduated from European School of Osteopathy with an Integrated Masters degree in Osteopathy and is a registered with the General Osteopathic Council and the Institute of Osteopathy.

She treats cranio-structurally, meaning that her treatments combine elements of structural osteopathy and cranial osteopathy, allowing her to provide a body lead treatment tailored to patient’s individual needs. She also encourages her patients take an active role in their treatment and management by giving exercises when necessary and having frequent reviews of their progression. During her time as an undergraduate she had been introduced to the treatment of infants, children and pre and post-natal women. Over time this became a keen interest and as a graduate her interest and passion for treating children and pre/post-natal patients grew. Her passion for osteopathy comes from her desire to "make patients feel like they have a new body"

TMJ Dysfunction

The temporal mandibular joint is a gliding hinge joint that connects your lower jaw to the skull. The mobile part of the joint is the condyle which fits into a socket, called the articular fossa. Between the condyle and the fossa is a cartilaginous disc that allows the condyle to move easily as the mouth opens and closes, as well as to cushion the joint and absorb stress.

Causes of TMJ Dysfunction

✨Teeth grinding (also known as Bruxism)

✨Arthritis of the condyle

✨ Dislocation or displacement of the disc

✨Disc perforation- when the disc develops a hole

✨Injury- breaking the jaw

Symptoms

✨ Pain or tenderness of the jaw either bilaterally or unilaterally

✨Aching around the ear or in the ear

✨Difficulty and/or pain whilst chewing

✨Aching in the face

✨Locking the joint- making opening and closing the mouth difficult

✨Clicking, grating or popping sound during jaw movements

How can Osteopathy help?

✨Muscle energy technique- release tension of the muscles that help you chew

✨Balance ligamentous tension- balancing the ligaments around the TMJ to help relax the joint and reduce restriction and improve function

✨Soft tissue massage- massaging the muscle around the neck and cheeks to help reduce retention

Self Help

If your TMJ pain is a result of stress and teeth grinding at night, mindfulness exercises can be very helpful to ease the mind and destress the body.

TMJ exercises can be given for at home management which wi continue to strengthen weakens muscles, release tension in tight muscles and overall help improve function.

A lot of people are hypermobile and don’t know it, or are hypermobile and do not know how to manage the symptoms of it. These slides give some basic background information on what Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder is, focusing mainly on Benign Joint Hypermobility.

As a hypermobile person myself, I suffered from joint pain from a very young age without understanding why as an 11 year old I was suffering so much with lower back pain and neck pain. Through my time as a student studying Osteopathy, I discovered that I was hypermobile and this allowed me to understand my body in a better way. I learnt how my body responds to shock, certain exercises and activities, what osteopathic treatments work and most importantly how to strengthen my body and get some stability and into my joints.

I’m hoping to start a dialogue and educate those with Joint Hypermobility so that they can take the management of their body into their own hands and learn about themselves in a way that may not have thought of before.
