In the week of Midsummer what better than sharing photos of Hypericum perforatum, St John’s wort.
It is a beautiful midsummer flowering plant.
As an external preparation an oil can made by picking the flowers and infusing them in olive oil.
Externally, It has traditions in healing burns, healing wounds and relieving nerve pain.
Always consult a herbalist to discuss herbs for health

Cambridge repair cafe is up and running

What fantastic news to hear that The EDGE Café are hosting their very first REPAIR CAFE on Saturday, July 9th between 1pm-4pm, (351 Mill Road, Cambridge CB1 3DF).
Repair Cafes are community events that match people who need stuff fixed with people who like fixing things.
This is a free event to which you can bring along your broken item. Their volunteer repairers will assess and then attempt to repair the item. If repair is not possible then they may be able to offer advice on where you can take the item for further assessment. There are no promises and no guarantees, but if something can be saved the repairers will give it their best efforts.
One key principle of a Repair Café is that you sit with the repairer whilst they attempt the repair. You can learn more about your broken item and the repair process.
They will welcome the following items for repair:
Electrical and mechanical items such as clocks, toasters, blenders, kettles, lamps, CD players, coffee machines, headphones
Sewing repair (clothing, bags, textiles)
Toys
Bicycles
They cannot accept microwaves and are only able to change the battery on some mobile phones.
Please book your item in via the online form here:
https://www.recoveryhubcambridge.co.uk/.../repair-cafe
and provide as much detail as possible about the fault. Items will be allocated to a repairer and you will receive a time slot to bring your item to the Café.
You can turn up on the day, but bookings will take priority and you may have to wait or there may not be a time to have your item seen by a repairer. They have politely requested only one item per person, but if they have time and you can wait as necessary then you may be able to have a second item seen by a repairer.

So time to get digging out your loved items that haven't been used because of a little fault, and see if you can bring them back to life!

Sprig of Rosemary
Sprig of sage

1 chopped onion
2 slices lemon
2 cloves of garlic
Cover with cider vinegar

Traditional ‘fire’ vinegar is used to increase circulation and digestion with pungent warming antimicrobial herbs. An ideal preparation to make at home and add to the familys medicine chest. You can take a tsp/ day to give the immune system a boost or 1 tsp four times daily with cold and flu symptoms. The warming quality of the plants will benefit a colder constitution.

Spring brings the Viola odorata, sweet violet flowers.
The sight and smell are a little burst of joy.
They grow in moist open spaces and both leaves and flowers can be consciously harvested and added fresh to salads, sandwiches and wraps.

Violets have a long history in many traditional medicine
systems from around the world and has been traditionally used for dry coughs and irritated skin.

They have a cooling and moistening quality that works well on heated and dry tissue states as well as the respiratory and lymphatic systems.

A herbal infusion can be made from fresh or dried parts or if infused in honey can make a great cough syrup.

If there aren’t any growing near, herbal haven.com is a great local herb nursery the does online ordering.

Best wishes

Thanks to Forge-Cambridge and everyone who shared a Lemon balm tea at our herbal tea tasting this morning. Thoroughly relaxing!

"It is within that space, that breath, when foraging, preparing, eating, drinking or simply sitting with plants, that we are able to heal on a deeper level'

Very much looking forward to the online shared herbal tea tasting experience and conversation with herbalist Vanessa Neville this morning !

This workshop has been delivered as part of FORGE - an exhibition exploring how reconnecting to history, relearning traditional skills and crafts, and time in nature during the pandemic can give us hope for a kinder future.

We would love to hear about your foraging experiences, recipes, walks or ideas
