How long do you think it takes for a sample from our Emergency Department to reach our blood sciences lab?

Would you believe us if we told you it takes just 34 seconds? This is thanks to a new direct route in our Pneumatic Tube System (air‑powered tube network), which is a 75% faster journey that’s already speeding up patient care.

To mark Healthcare Science Week, Chief Medical Officer Dr Sue Broster visited the lab to hear how giving our ED its own direct route has eased pressure across our hospitals, cutting overall system load by around 25% and improving performance for everyone who relies on the service.

Healthcare sciences are the engine behind fast, accurate diagnosis, turning complex laboratory processes into timely clinical decisions that directly improve patient outcomes at Addenbrooke's Hospital.

As part of routine patient care, under Martha's Rule, all inpatients should expect to be asked two questions every day:

How are you feeling?

How are you feeling compared to when you were last asked?

The answers to these questions will be documented and action can be taken if needed.

If you have any concerns about yours or your loved one's condition, you can contact our Call for Concern team: https://orlo.uk/AcVfP

🚨 A stroke is a medical emergency. Act FAST. 🚨

Around 100,000 people in the UK have a stroke every year. Quick action can save lives and reduce long-term disability, but many people still don’t recognise the signs or call for help in time.

Remember FAST:

Face - drooping on one side
Arms - weakness or unable to raise
Speech - slurred or confused
Time - call 999 immediately

To help us prevent the spread of infection at our hospitals, please wash your hands with soap and water as you enter the building.

Some bugs, like norovirus, are tough to get rid of and hand sanitisers alone won’t work.

Handwashing helps protect you, other patients, and our staff.

On we’re proud to spotlight one of our latest You Made a Difference winners!

Surya Layton has been part of the CUH team since June 2010, when she joined as a part-time phlebotomist at the Rosie Blood Test department. Over the years, her work has expanded, she now splits her time between the Glucose Tolerance Testing Clinic, supporting pregnant women, and the Oncology Blood Test department.

Two very different settings, but in both of them, Surya brings exactly the same thing: a gentleness and calmness that makes a real difference to the people she looks after.

Congratulations to Surya for winning one of our You Made a Difference awards this month!

Proud to celebrate Dr Louise Allen and the impact she continues to make across clinical care, innovation and entrepreneurship as we approach . 👏

For we are celebrating Dr. Louise Allen, Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Affiliated Associate Professor at University of Cambridge and Founder of Cambridge Medical Innovation Ltd.

Louise’s journey in clinical medicine reflects the unique challenges many women in this field face. Balancing patient care, family responsibilities and personal ambitions often feels like spinning plates, but it was only after her children had left school that Louise embarked on her innovation journey.

She founded Cambridge Medical Innovation Ltd, a company focused on developing solutions to improve flow and efficiency in NHS ophthalmology services.

She is also passionate about supporting fellow female founders. With women-led start-ups receiving just 2-3% of venture capital, despite often outperforming male-founded businesses, she urges aspiring entrepreneurs to seek mentorship and consider the Clinical Entrepreneur Programme for guidance and support - https://nhscep.com/.

Come along to the Careers Fair on Wednesday 11 March - link in comments.

Join our on (IP) on Thursday 26 March, featuring two female speakers sharing their expertise - link in comments.
