September is the season of 'Earth Element'; this is the time of harvesting and storing for the colder months to come. It is a calm and replete point, with energies becoming less outward than in the main summer weeks.

From an individual point of view it is a good time to focus on the centre of one's self and life, take stock of what has been experienced in the more 'yang months' and prepare for the more 'yin' and inward elements of months to come. Cooking, gardening, chi-gung, amongst other things, are all good for this season. Maybe being more easy on ourselves and not just checking into our progress by external monitors: but reflecting on what can be harvested for ourselves from our own emotional insights.

As the centre of the elements, traditionally to Chinese medicine, Earth also has a role at the turning point of all seasons - bringing all into the centre.

In September I will be starting to volunteer at University College Hospital in London and it will be really nice to help out with shiatsu and also communicate the shiatsu approach to new people, helping widen the benefits of this lovely form of massage and connection of the person to the wider natural world.

I'm now giving professional shiatsu treatments all from Gwydir Street in Cambridge, and it has been very nice to meet new clients over the summer and lovely to find so much local interest in connecting emotions, body and mind.

Tapping and gently shaking are simple techniques to enhance the flow of energy around the body and benefit the lymphatic system and blood flow. If things have got a bit stuck, simple shaking of feet and hands and tapping down the outer sides of arms and legs and up the inner sides (more gently), as well as across the upper chest, shoulders, sides and lower back, is very invigorating and aids the whole system.

Moving into Spring and there is that feeling literally 'in the air' of the world awaiting to unfurl again with growth into the warmer weather - flowers appearing, birds beginning to sing more vigorously...this sense of renewal can be utilised by us in our own individual lives if we help ourselves to set useful and achievable goals which will bring fulfillment and wellbeing. It is the season of 'Wood Energy' from a Daoist viewpoint and in us this is the energy which helps us to create and connect and to plan our lives well. It might be good to bear in mind a quote attributed to the great Martin Luther King: 'If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.'

The acupoints of tCM have so much value. They can be very helpful to hold to support an area of the energetic system, when simply made contact with by yourself (i.e. just gently pressed or massaged)

As this is winter time, the season of the Water element in Five Element Theory (the channels of Water are Kidney and Bladder); a powerful point to press for health and wellbeing is Kidney Three: 'Taixi' or 'Great Stream'. It is found on the big toe side of the ankle = next to and in the middle of the ankle bone (not on top of it!) This is a powerful point for aiding the energy of the Kidneys.

According to my points book, KD 3: 'Nourishes Kidney Yin; tonifies Kidney Yang. Strengthens the lower back and knees and benefits the uterus.' So it has a lot to offer!

Winter is the season in which energies retreat and hibernate awaiting renewal in Spring. It is a good time to contemplate and to nourish the system with healthy food and taking time to relax the nervous system - which is expressed in tCM through the Bladder channel which flows alongside the spine (with points which connect into organ functions and which are often used in acupuncture).
