As we marked last week, there's no better reminder of the power of global collaboration in healthcare.

Following a successful knowledge exchange visit in August last year, a multidisciplinary team comprising Fonseca, a GP trainee and Cambridge Global Health Partnerships (CGHP) NHS England - East of England Global Health Fellow and Julie Burkin, senior occupational therapist at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust just completed an inspiring week of collaboration with our partners, Himalayan Hospital and Ganga Prem Hospice in Uttarakhand, India. Through meetings, discussions, ward rounds and home visits, the team have set a clear roadmap for:

📌 Strengthening service delivery of dietetic practices in critical disease areas such as liver disease and oncology

📌Establishing Standard Operating Procedures for palliative care referrals to enable earlier intervention

📌Identifying opportunities to expand Speech and Language Therapy service through targeted training and education

📌Creating bidirectional learning opportunities that enhance care quality in both the UK and Indian healthcare systems

This immersive experience in a vastly different healthcare context has equipped the UK team with insights and skills that they'll bring back to the —a testament to the value of global health partnerships.

The team’s visit was supported by CGHP, Rama foundation and NHSE East of England.

Today marks the United Nation's 2026 International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development.

Approximately 34 million children globally live with disabling hearing loss and most of these live in low- and middle-income countries, making access to education difficult and limiting opportunities for children with hearing loss. In Malawi, CGHP's ear and hearing care project is working to improve access to education for young people living with hearing loss, by supporting the provision of affordable hearing equipment and creating training and teaching resources.

You can read more about the power of partnerships in improving hearing care in Malawi in Rachael Collins blog:

Rachael Collins is an ENT Surgical Registrar and East of England Global Health Fellow. As part of her fellowship she travelled to Malawi with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare staff to deliver ear and hearing care to remote and rural communities. Here she reflects on the impact of the visit and...
