Cambridge Global Health Partnerships (CGHP) facilitates safe, ethical and effective health partnerships between Cambridge and the East of England and low- and middle-income countries to tackle some of the biggest health issues of our time. The aim of Cambridge Global Health Partnerships is to support positive, sustainable change in global health through facilitating international partnerships with hospitals and health organisations in low and middle income countries. To achieve our aim we support staff and students of Cambridge University Hospitals and the local health community to make practical contributions to global health by volunteering.

Today we welcomed nine visitors from two CGHP-supported health partnerships in Malawi and Kenya for a week of reciprocal learning and collaboration. They’ll be working closely with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Papworth Hospital staff on ear and hearing care, trauma and orthopaedics, and antimicrobial resistance. 💊

The Malawi team from Kamuzu University of Health Sciences and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital are part of a project that’s strengthening workforce education and training to build skills and capacity of healthcare workers. The Kenya team of two pharmacists are part of a programme that’s improving antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control practices.

“These visits offer an incredible chance for many healthcare workers at Addenbrooke’s, the The Rosie Hospital and Royal Papworth hospitals to meet and learn from colleagues in other healthcare systems,” said CGHP Director Evelyn Brealey. “This week will deepen friendships and strengthen professional networks that ultimately improve healthcare for patients in all settings.” 🌍

Look out for more updates as the teams get stuck into a busy schedule of multidisciplinary team meetings, ward rounds and joint planning sessions. 💪

Dr Phillip De Souza is a CGHP East of England Global Health Fellow and a Respiratory Medicine registrar. His fellowship year has seen him set up a project with a team at Kenyatta National Hospital to improve the safety of common procedures like chest drains. 🫁

The first Respiratory Medicine trainee to take on a fellowship, in his blog he reflects on the challenge of building a partnership from scratch, as well as the huge opportunity it has to promote further research into respiratory conditions. 🌍

“Witnessing first-hand how different the resources are in other countries, how healthcare professionals manage conditions differently, and how I can make a small difference has been awe-inspiring,” explains Phillip.

“Being able to meet such amazing teams across the world, contribute to improvements in healthcare and learn about how positive and inspiring healthcare professionals are, in what we perceive to be challenging conditions, is incredibly humbling.”

Here’s an inspiring read for a Friday! Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust nurse Madeleine Custerson reflects on the enormous impact a week spent working alongside Ugandan nurses has had on her – both as a person and as a nurse.

Madeleine is a Staff Nurse in the Neurosciences Critical Care Unit (NCCU) at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. She visited Kampala to deliver teaching and training alongside UK and Ugandan nurses as part of the SCALE Critical Care Project that is strengthening skills, knowledge and capability of staff in both countries.

“Working with a team of amazing people made me proud to be a nurse. The passion and dedication of the nurses and other professionals from both Mulago and Kawempe Hospitals was also astounding. The knowledge and skill set they have is so diverse to cope with the scarce resources and staffing levels, yet I never heard any complaints. I only saw resilience.”

Last week was a busy week for health partnership activity in Kenya. Psychiatry registrar at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) and East of England Global Health Fellow Fiona Douglas co-delivered community mental health training with local faculty at Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital for nurses working across Kakamega County’s primary healthcare facilities. 🏥

Based on the World Health Organization’s Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) guideline for mental, neurological and substance use disorders, the aim was to build the capacity of nurses. They are often the first point of contact for people experiencing mental health challenges and the training explored the crucial role nurses play in early detection and intervention. 🧠

Meanwhile infectious diseases registrar at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and CGHP member Eleanor Turnbull-Jones, along with retired Chief Medical Officer for Wales and CGHP committee member Tony Jewell, delivered guest talks at a Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) workshop aimed at reducing AMR. They presented data on antibiotic prescribing practices collected throughout the week from 30 community pharmacists. 💊

It's been a productive couple of days for the multidisciplinary team of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust nurses and AHPs shadowing Indian staff on ward rounds, patient assessments and home visits on a week-long visit to Uttarakhand.

With Rama Foundation and CGHP's support they're working with healthcare professionals at Indian partner institutions the Himalayan Hospital and Ganga Prem Hospice to learn from and share knowledge with one another.

It's an opportunity to co-deliver teaching and training in a completely different healthcare setting, with a focus on the vital role of nurses and AHPs in delivering palliative care.

“One nurse said that since the project started, her knowledge and confidence in looking after critically ill patients has improved enormously. Most importantly, her hospital now recognises her value, her skill-set and her knowledge and will keep her in ICU rather than moving her to work in other ward areas. This gave me goosebumps as she was speaking and made me feel extremely proud of the hard work put in over these last few years.” ✨

Celeste Formenton is a Critical Care Practice Development Senior Sister at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She recently returned to Kampala as part of the SCALE Critical Care health partnership and was amazed by the growth in knowledge and confidence of the Ugandan staff to teach and lead training. 💪

In her blog for CGHP she explains the impact of the visit on her own development as an inclusive educator, as well as the satisfaction of seeing practice changes embedded sustainably through the train-the-trainer approach. 👇
