Prevalence:
Globally: About 10-30% of the population experiences insomnia symptoms. However, for some groups (e.g., older adults), the rate can reach as high as 50-60%.
In the U.S.: Approximately 1 in 3 adults reports experiencing insomnia symptoms occasionally, and around 10-15% of adults report chronic insomnia.
Gender Differences:
Women are more likely to experience insomnia than men. Hormonal changes (e.g., menstruation, pregnancy, menopause) are often linked to increased insomnia in women.
Age-Related:
Insomnia is more common in adults over 60, often due to health issues, medications, and changes in sleep patterns.
Impact on Mental Health:
Insomnia is strongly correlated with mental health issues: about 50% of people with insomnia also suffer from a mental health disorder, especially anxiety and depression.
Economic Impact:
In the U.S., insomnia is estimated to cost around $63 billion annually in lost productivity.
Chronic Insomnia:
Chronic insomnia, defined as insomnia lasting over three months, affects about 6-10% of adults and can have severe impacts on both physical and mental health.
