🩺🌍 Healthcare Worker Day is celebrated on various dates in the PACED countries. In Tajikistan, August 18 marks the birthday of the esteemed Tajik-Persian scientist, physician, and philosopher Avicenna. In Azerbaijan, it is observed on June 17. In many other countries, it occurs on the third Sunday of June.

However, what we know for certain is that you deserve recognition every single day of the year: for being present and offering support; for choosing a profession that demands so much of you, yet dedicating yourself entirely to it; for treating pain while remaining kind and compassionate 💙

Thank you for everything you do—any day, in any location. Regardless of when your country celebrates Healthcare Worker Day, we always celebrate you.

🌐 PACED Managing Director, Roman Sklotskiy, has just returned from the CODE YAA - Palliative Care Education Summer School, as part of COST Action CF22127, bringing back not only notes but also a whole new layer of insight and inspiration.

✅ The School brought together professionals from across Europe to explore what it means to lead in palliative care. Collectively, they examined leadership competencies crucial for driving transformation, effective project management strategies, curriculum design, evaluation, and research. They also reflected on the role of ethics in everyday education and other fundamental topics.

The learning did not stop in the workshop room; it continued over lunch tables, in hallway conversations, and during shared reflections on how to lead with empathy, compassion, structure, and purpose.

We wish to extend our immense gratitude to the organisers and facilitators — especially Dr Simone Veronese, Dr Vilma Tripodoro, Dr Carlos Centeno, Dr Piret P**l, Dr Minna Hökkä, all the members of Working Group 4, and the ATLANTES Global Observatory of Palliative Care — for fostering an intellectually rich, emotionally grounded environment, brimming with momentum for what lies ahead. 🌐 На прошлой неделе управляющий директор PACED Роман Склоцкий принял участие в Летней школе CODE-YAA, проходившей в рамках COST Action CA22127, и привёз с собой много новых идей и впечатлений.

✅ Школа объединила специалистов со всей Европы для совместного изучения лидерства в паллиативной помощи. Участники обсуждали компетенции, способные влиять на систему, размышляли о стратегиях управления, разработке учебных программ, оценке знаний и проведении исследований, а также затронули важнейшие этические аспекты повседневного образования.

Обучение не ограничивалось семинарами — оно продолжалось и между сессиями: в коридорах, во время обеденных перерывах, в дискуссиях о неразрывной связи лидерства с состраданием, структурированностью мысли и целеустремлённостью.

PACED Programme Director Ira Chernozhukova attended the 19th World Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care (European Association for Palliative Care - EAPC Vzw) in Helsinki from 29 to 31 May and is sharing photographs along with key reflections.

Top trends from EAPC 2025:
📍 As populations age and dementia cases rise across developed countries, neuropalliative care is becoming increasingly relevant.
📍 There is growing attention to palliative care for refugees, particularly those from former Western European colonies.
📍 The focus is shifting from solely the patient to also include the caregivers. There is a clear necessity for infrastructure to support those who provide care.
📍 New technologies, especially artificial intelligence, are being actively discussed and explored.
📍 Perhaps the central theme of the Congress was collaboration—at all levels: between organisations and foundations, across medical teams, and from local partnerships to international cooperation.

📍 По мере старения населения и роста числа случаев деменции в развитых странах всё более актуальной становится нейропаллиативная помощь.
📍 Много внимания уделяется паллиативной помощи беженцам, особенно выходцам из бывших колоний западноевропейских стран.
📍 В фокусе — не только паллиативный пациент, но и тот, кто за ним ухаживает. Растёт необходимость в поддержке этих людей.
📍 Активно обсуждаются современные технологии, в частности — искусственный интеллект.
📍 Можно сказать, что одной из основных тем Конгресса стало сотрудничество на всех уровнях: от организаций и фондов до врачей и младшего персонала, от обмена опытом между учреждениями до международного сотрудничества.

Just like any adult, a child is never a diagnosis—they are a person deserving of respect, care, and love. Those around them must understand this, as children may not fully comprehend what is happening. Protecting children's rights means recognising their individuality and supporting them along the path that life has given them.
PACED works to ensure that palliative care in our regions is associated not with death, but with life and dignity. On International Children’s Day, we wish to highlight what drives us towards this goal: professional education, respect for the choices of young patients or young adults, and attentiveness to their needs.
We congratulate all our colleagues on this day, for it is through you that we touch the lives of children. We are immensely grateful for that.

Как и взрослый человек, ребёнок — это никогда не диагноз, а личность, заслуживающая уважения, заботы и любви. Для ребёнка особенно важно, чтобы люди, окружающие его, понимали это, ведь сам он понимает далеко не всё, что с ним происходит. Защищать права детей — значит признавать их индивидуальность и поддерживать на том пути, который им достался.
PACED стремится к тому, чтобы паллиативная помощь в наших регионах ассоциировалась не со смертью, а с жизнью и достоинством. В Международный день защиты детей мы хотим напомнить о том, что ведёт нас к этой цели: профессиональное образование, уважение к выбору маленького пациента и молодого взрослого и внимание к его потребностям.
Мы поздравляем всех коллег с этим праздником, поскольку касаемся жизней детей именно через вас, и благодарны вам за это.

✨ More on the winners of the PACED 2025 Grants Programme! We have already introduced you to Maral Turdumatova from Kyrgyzstan. Now, allow us to present our second grantee, Anele.

Anele Bekturova is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing at Kazakh National Medical University and a recognised expert in palliative care in Kazakhstan 🇰🇿.

In May 2025, Anele will attend the EAPC Congress in Finland. She has chosen this event to learn from the experiences of palliative care teams in other countries and to expand her professional network for future collaboration.
