Adult Conversations Speech and Language Therapy for Adults with Acquired Communication and/or Swallowing Disorders

✨ Last week I had the pleasure of completing Ampcare ESP training in London with the brilliant Russ Campbell and Dr Sue Pownall at RCSLT HQ.

A fantastic hands-on day packed with evidence-based practice, practical demos, and great discussion around supporting swallowing, speech, and facial function. 💬💪

Feeling inspired and ready to bring this into my clinical practice! 🎓👏

🎥 Here’s a quick glimpse from the day...

Feeling grateful today!

Had the absolute pleasure of meeting a lovely client whose carer shared this kind feedback after our first session:

"It was so great to meet you and to finally have some ideas... You really were great. Thank you so much, Mark."

It means a lot to hear this. Here’s to small steps, persistence, and progress!

⭐ Client Feedback ⭐

"Mark was attentive, personable, and professional. He really took the time to understand my specific concerns and offered both reassurance and practical advice to help manage my symptoms. He was also incredibly efficient - following up with an email confirmation on the same day.

I was very satisfied with both the meeting and the follow-up support."

Thank you for your kind words, Anne! 🙌

Fantastic Feedback from one of my aphasic patients and their family.

I wanted to share this amazing feedback from a family I’ve been supporting:

*"Mark provided a detailed plan after carrying out an assessment for our son, who had suffered a stroke last year.

The assessment focused on areas that would improve speech and confidence.

We set up a package including weekly home visits, additional exercises, and recommended apps to enhance communication.

The results have been incredibly positive—not only in speech but also in memory and numerical improvements gained from the sessions.

Mark also provided a detailed end summary, which was really helpful."*

Helping people regain their communication skills and confidence is what makes this work so rewarding.

🌟 Fab Feedback from Yvonne 🌟

*"Mark always responds quickly to any communication and addresses any concerns with care and sensitivity. His therapy services have made a real difference, and he is thorough in assessing progress. His sessions strike the perfect balance between being professional and friendly, and his experience and knowledge shine through in every session.

Mark has been completely reliable and punctual, and we feel we made the right choice in selecting him to support my husband, Derek, with his dysphagia therapy. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him!"*

Thank you, Yvonne, for your kind words. It’s a privilege to be part of Derek’s journey and see his progress. 💙

I'm pleased to share this wonderful feedback from Kate, the daughter of one of my patients, Angela:

"Excellent communication from initial contact to our in-person meeting. Mark's insightful and sensitive questions beforehand meant he was fully prepared to deliver an efficient, up-to-date and professional swallowing assessment for my mother, who has recently been diagnosed with dysphagia. He was professional and courteous throughout the entire process. We are really pleased with his comprehensive analysis and the support plan he's recommended moving forwards."

Thank you, Kate, for taking the time to share your positive experience. My priority is always ensuring patients and their families feel informed, supported and confident in their care journey.

🗣️ Speech and Language Therapy for Adults – More Than Just Words

People often think speech and language therapy is just for kids, but that’s not the case. I work with adults who’ve had strokes, brain injuries, or neurological conditions that affect their communication and swallowing. It’s about more than just talking—it’s about being understood, feeling confident, and staying connected.

The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists has put out a new video explaining what SLT is. If you’re curious, it’s worth a watch.

📽️ Watch it here:

💡 Engaging Patients with the Facial Movement Recorder App! 📱💪

I've been using the Facial Movement Recorder app with some my patients, and it's been a great tool for keeping them engaged and motivated in their therapy! 🎯

Patients can see and track how much certain muscles are working, which helps them stay focused on their progress. The real-time feedback makes the exercises more interactive and rewarding, encouraging them to keep going!

If you're supporting patients with facial movement or swallowing rehab, this app is definitely worth exploring. 👇💬

🌟 Client Feedback 🌟

"Mark was very professional in his work, very helpful, and my mother-in-law commented on how she found the whole experience excellent.

Thank you, Mark!

Would highly recommend the service."

— Jayne

This feedback was provided by a care home patient and her daughter-in-law. The patient was initially on a Level 5 diet and Level 1 fluids while awaiting a review assessment. Following the assessment, she was able to safely progress to Level 0 fluids and a Level 7 easy-to-chew diet.

🥄💧🗣️ I strive to deliver expert, person-centred care that prioritises comfort, builds confidence, and achieves the best possible outcomes for every individual I support. 💚🩶

🟣 World Cancer Day – Supporting Communication & Swallowing Needs 🟣

Today, on World Cancer Day, we recognise the impact that cancer can have on speech, language, and swallowing. Many people with cancer, particularly head and neck cancers, experience difficulties that affect their ability to communicate and eat safely.

As Speech and Language Therapists, we play a vital role in supporting individuals through:
✅ Voice & Speech Rehabilitation – Helping those affected by surgery or radiotherapy regain their voice and clarity of speech.
✅ Swallowing Support (Dysphagia Management) – Assessing and managing swallowing difficulties to ensure safe eating and drinking.
✅ Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) – Providing communication aids for those who cannot speak due to treatment effects.
✅ Psychosocial Support – Helping individuals regain confidence in communication during and after cancer treatment.

Cancer care is about more than just treatment—it’s about quality of life. SLTs help ensure that people can speak, eat, and connect with others, empowering them throughout their journey.

Let’s raise awareness and ensure that no one faces cancer alone. 💜
