I want to honour Michel Odent – a revolutionary pioneer of childbirth, and one of the kindest and most inspiring men I have ever encountered, whose wisdom guided my journey and touched the lives of so many.
I can’t express how deeply grateful I feel to have come across his insights about the needs of women in labour 16 years ago, when I was pregnant with my first child. His words resonated with me instantly, leading me to the most beautiful, transformative, and empowering birth. That experience changed me profoundly as a woman and later inspired me to become a doula, so I could carry forward the gift of his teachings to other mothers.
When I moved to London, I had the immense honour of studying with him in person - learning directly from the one who had inspired me most. I still remember the touching moment when Michel wore the Bulgarian spring bracelet, the Martenitza, that I had given him during our training. 🥹
Michel reminded us that birth is not something to be managed or controlled, but an involuntary process to be protected, a primal rhythm to be honoured. He was one of the first to show the world that the birth environment matters – the warmth, the dim light, the sense of safety and privacy – and that oxytocin, the “hormone of love,” is central not only in birth, but in life itself. He also raised awareness that the way babies are born has profound consequences – not only life-long, but even trans-generational.
His vision transformed the way countless midwives, doulas, and mothers around the globe think about birth. Thanks to him, millions of babies have been welcomed gently, in peace and love, and mothers have felt honoured, respected, and empowered in their most sacred journey.
Rest in peace, Michel Odent. Thank you for inspiring me, guiding me, and for everything you brought into this world. Your words will live on in my work, and in the truth you reminded us that “To change the world, we must first change the way the babies are being born.” 💜
