We are aware that the recent meningitis outbreak has caused understandable concern in our community. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the families and individuals affected during this very difficult time. We want to reassure our patients that we are working closely with public health partners and continuing to review the situation.
There are several strains of meningococcal infection. The MenACWY vaccine provides good protection against MenA, MenC, MenW and MenY and is routinely offered to teenagers in school Years 9–10, with catch-up available up to age 25. However, it does not protect against all forms of meningitis. Other strains, such as MenB, can circulate in young adults. Knowing the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia is important, as early treatment can save lives.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is contacting anyone identified as a close contact of confirmed cases directly. If you have been identified as a close contact, you will be given instructions on how to access prophylactic (preventative) antibiotics. If needed, these can be arranged through NHS 111.
If you are concerned about symptoms of meningitis or septicaemia, please seek urgent medical advice by contacting the practice, calling NHS 111, or attending urgent care if necessary.
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates if further advice is issued.
