Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) the emerging model of both Psychology and Psychotherapy
I use this, to great effect, with almost all my clients using simple eye closure. One such was a Zoom client who's life-long head scratching had become unbearable through Lockdown.
"I found Guy's details online and kept the link for some months before contacting him. I had an intrusive habit of head-scratching since I was in my teens, and during the last year of lockdowns I grew increasingly to realise I needed to address this compulsive behaviour. His website mentioned sessions could take place on Zoom, so it seemed an ideal opportunity to be kind to myself with this symptom that had bothered me on and off for decades, and which was something I did in private, a bit like self-harm really. I filled in a short questionnaire about how and when the symptom occurred, what my hopes for the therapy were, and so on. During the first longer session, Guy explained how he worked, and then with my consent Guy gradually put me under hypnosis. This was a state of deep relaxation in which I was fully conscious of what was happening, but evidently open to suggestion.
The effect was like a waking dream state where thoughts and feelings came and went, with my whole being involved. I became aware that the part of me that did the behaviour was myself as a child, surprisingly trying to protect me from being under severe threat. Another part of me was a critical parent, who accused me. My true self was able to bring these two parts into a relationship of kindness and co-operation with me, instead of opposition and misunderstanding, transforming the critical part into a watchful ally that looked out for me. Her message to me at last was, "Get on with it!" which I take to mean, the encouragement to go forward in life with all my skills and abilities that I have developed over the years. At the same time, the child part was embraced and felt loved. This was a huge relief.
I found that the head-scratching and picking simply fell away and I felt no need for that behaviour any more. A few weeks later a follow-up session, together with some recordings that Guy had sent me, confirmed the success of the therapy and added some more tools for reinforcing the effect of the original session. I have received great benefit from the work of these two sessions, with increased confidence and authority in life situations. I'm more able to relax and my sleep is better. All in all a great result. "
Many thanks again
