Retinoids and tretinoin are not for everyone because their high potency frequently causes severe irritation, dryness, peeling, and redness—a process often called purging. They are unsuitable for sensitive, rosacea-prone, or eczema-prone skin, and are generally unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Why Tretinoin/Retinoids Are Not Universal
Significant Irritation and Sensitivity: Tretinoin is a powerful, active form of Vitamin A that often causes chemical-like burns, sensitivity, and peeling.
Irritant Reaction: They can cause contact dermatitis and increase skin sensitivity to UV damage, making strict sun protection necessary.
Not Suitable for All Skin Conditions: Those with chronic skin conditions like rosacea or eczema may find their skin barrier damaged further by the intense exfoliation.
Limited Efficacy for Specific Acne Types: While effective for many, some acne types (like hormonal) might not respond to topicals alone.
Alternatives for Sensitive Skin
For individuals who cannot tolerate strong retinoids, alternatives include retinaldehyde (gentler but effective), bakuchiol (a plant-based, non-irritating option), or peptides.
