Erika Lawal - We Are Yogaful WAY is about discovering who we are and can be through an exploration of our body, breath and mind; who we are with ourselves and with others. That's the WAY.

You don't have to be super-fit to be a WAY-er, but it'll definitely work for you if you aspire to take yourself a little further than where you are right this minute! The WAY tribe is one full of curious individuals who can't help but push their own envelope. WAY is about discovering who we are and can be through an exploration of our body, breath and mind; how we are with ourselves and with others,the community of other like-minded souls. At We Are Yogaful, we draw on the more strong physical practice styles such as Rocket, ashtanga and vinyasa, but just like its more contemplative cousins, WAY yoga is about far more than how low we can bend or how high we can kick - it's about what we learn about ourselves and our relationship to self and others while we undertake that journey. The yoga starts on the mat, but the high persists once off it. That's why We Are Yogaful.

SUNNY SUNDAY PARK YOGA IS BACK!

The weather tomorrow looks set to be blistering, but you can beat the heat by joining us in the shade tomorrow for 60 minutes of mind relaxing, body shaping Modified Ashtanga.

I've grown to love yoga in the park - a chance to meet in the flesh with yogis that turn up online week in, week out; to look each other in the eye and smile; to hear people, birds, water; to watch the clouds in savasana. It reminds us that we're human and have missed being with other humans all this time.

LIVE HEADSTAND & HANDSTAND ZOOM TRAINING IN FEBRUARY

Ever wondered what it feels like to view your world upside down?

There comes a moment in the life of anyone who has ever enjoyed practising yoga when they pause to look either admiringly or enviously at the seemingly effortlessness with which others seem to be able to “pop” into upside-down postures like headstand or handstand.

True, more than a few of those agile yogis will have had the benefit of gym classes as youngsters, so have a natural advantage, but the vast majority of us have just had to put the work in learn how to use our bodies in a completely different way. It looks impressive, but at the end of the day, it’s just us playing and rediscovering parts of ourselves long forgotten. It's also really good for improving blood circulation, lymphatic drainage and calming the parasympathetic nervous system, the latter of which plays a huge role in maintaining our mental and emotional wellbeing.

As a teacher, I find that students need to pass 5 basic milestones in order to practise these postures:

- Overcome fear of falling
- Overcome fear of being upside down
- Achieve sufficient core strength, hip and shoulder flexibility
- Understand body placement
- Control of body placement

Join me next month for a short series of two live online workshops designed to help you achieve these milestones on your journey to successful headstand. Working in a small group via Zoom, we’ll unpick all the core elements of both postures, practice drills to build confidence, strength and flexibility, learn tricks to get there faster and in safety and above all, having some laughs and whole lot of FUN!

This set of workshops is aimed at those new to or struggling with supported headstand and handstand.

Dates: 21st and 28th February 2021

Time: 14.30-16.00

Cost: £15.00 per workshop (£25.00 if booking both dates together).

OK that's us now until the 5th January!

Gratitude in 2020... yes, really!

I know, it sounds odd to be thankful for everything this year has thrown at us, but I really am! And as we approach the end of the year, I'm reflecting on what 2020 has given me...

I have found time I didn't realise I had (albeit, I've filled it to the brim) I've had the opportunity to learn so much both academically and personally, so much alone time has been both challenging and very much welcomed and at the same time, everyone has been there, just in a different way - I communicate more now with some people than I did before because we could never quite find the time to catch up over a coffee - thank you World Wide Web ☕️

Of course we cannot ignore that the biggest toll it has taken is in the testing of our mental health - it's been tough enough to just keep pushing through each day without trying to be superhuman, and so; I did not learn how to make sourdough bread, I did not learn another language or take up a new daily anything, because I have enough on my plate day to day and if there is anything 2020 has taught me it's that you truly need to take things day by day and just give yourself a break ♥️

I hope that whatever you take from 2020 - you realise that you've got this! You're still here! We've got a new year ahead and with gratitude and mindfulness we can find opportunity and growth, even when it doesn't feel like it at the time.

Sadly, following the announcement that we are going into Tier 3 in Canterbury, getting together in person on Sunday mornings is going to have to wait a little longer 😢 but fear not! Our Sunday morning classes via Zoom are still a great way for us to stay connected, keep your yoga practice on track and make that ever important time for yourself, mind and body.

We are taking a break this weekend, but will return on Sunday 13th December for our 10am Modified Ashtanga Primary Series and it would be great to see you there!

Don't forget, we also have our Tuesday night Rocket and/or Yin & Yoga Nidra class if you fancy something a little different at the start of your week.
