Have you ever wondered what the difference is between the two most common injuries I see in the clinic? 🤔

Strains and sprains are both acute injuries, caused by pretty much the same mechanisms (twisting, sudden movements). But how do we differentiate them?

Answer: location!

Strains tend to be found in areas with large muscle content (ie- the back, glutes and hamstrings)

Sprains are near the joint line, as they involve the minor tearing of ligaments.

Today is World Mental Health Day 🧘‍♀️🌍

Around 45% of those with chronic pain will experience depression at some point.

But did you know, that depression can heighten sensitivity to pain, sometimes making it feel worse than it physically is?

So how can sports therapy help?

- Sports massage increases serotonin by 28% and dopamine by 31%

- The parasympathetic nervous system activates during massage and exercise, lowering cortisol

- Physical activity boosts endorphins which improves mood

The most important take away here is to look after yourself. Take each day as it comes. Life can be really unfair sometimes, but it’s important to know you’re not alone, and help is out there
