Clutter Buddies, our collaborative program with University of South Wales Psychology Department 💚🧠

Since launching in May 2024, this initiative has offered psychology students short to medium term volunteer placements supporting individuals with hoarding tendencies, excessive clutter, and difficulties with home organisation.

Through this partnership, students apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, providing compassionate, practical support while contributing to developing new approaches in hoarding intervention and awareness.

It has been a huge success so far, with students gaining invaluable hands-on experience and service users benefiting from personalised, empathetic support. And has even led to two placements joining our team on a full-time basis, a true reflection of the initiative’s effectiveness and shared commitment to lasting change.

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to work closely with the University of South Wales, a huge thank you to Dan Bowers, Maud, and the Psychology Department for making this collaboration possible🫶🏼💚

Our founder, Kayley Hyman, recently had the opportunity to write an article for Welsh Housing Quarterly highlighting the urgent need for a nationally structured response to hoarding support ✍🏼💙

Even though Hoarding Disorder has been recognised as a mental health disorder since 2013, there is still very limited pathways for clients to access the appropriate support. The lack of clear national guidance often means organisations are left unsure how to respond, leading to inconsistent and sometimes unfair outcomes for those affected.

It’s time to move beyond forced clearances and eviction notices, and instead, embrace harm reduction, collaboration and empathy when supporting those affected by hoarding💙

We are so excited to welcome Kirsty to the team at Holistic Hoarding 👋🏼🤩🩵

We’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Kirsty for several years through her roles with our partners Clouds End CIC and as the face behind National Hoarding Awareness Week. We’re now absolutely thrilled to have her join us in-house as our new Business and Marketing Support.

Alongside her extensive experience in keeping organisations running smoothly behind the scenes, Kirsty brings a strong understanding of mental health, especially all things hoarding, and is currently training to become a counsellor.

With her unique blend of logic, creativity, and compassion, we know Kirsty will make a hugely positive contribution to both our current projects and our exciting future ventures.🩵

Did you know? Hoarding behaviours usually don’t occur in isolation and are commonly associated with additional co-occurring conditions 🫶🏼💡

When supporting a person with hoarding behaviours, it’s important to:

🩵Acknowledge every person’s experience with hoarding is unique, and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to support.
🩵Recognise and take into account underlying factors and co-morbid conditions.
🩵Approach with empathy, not judgment.
🩵Understand a persons challenges are shaped by more than just excess belongings, the primary focus is always the their safety and wellbeing.

Appreciating the complexities of each person’s experience ensures the support provided is effective, empathetic, and avoids causing further harm 🏠

We are proud to be spending at the Mental Health Awards & Conference in Wales💚

This year’s theme, access to services, really resonates with our work. For people living with Hoarding Disorder, a recognised mental health condition by and the DSM-5, finding the right support can be one of the biggest challenges.

World Mental Health Day is a reminder that every condition deserves understanding, compassion and equal recognition. By keeping the conversation open, we can help break down stigma and create space for people to feel heard and supported💬🌿

We are thrilled to be joined once again by Kayley Hyman, director of Holistic Hoarding, as she delivers her bespoke session CPD Accredited Trauma Informed Approaches to Hoarding Behaviour🤍

The behaviour of hoarding is often a way of coping with and trying to heal distress & trauma caused by experiences the individual has gone through, Kayley will help you understand the link between Trauma and Hoarding Behaviour and how you can best support clients without triggering re-traumatisation.

There are a few spaces remaining for the next session taking place next Wednesday 19th November, running virtually on zoom from 9.30am - 4pm.

We’re so proud to share that our family caseworker, Amy Coulson, has been named a finalist in the Social Business Wales Awards for Innovation of the Year💙

Amy has spent over 15 years honing her skills in the healthcare sector, with a specialisation in areas such as autism, elderly care, learning disabilities, children and families, and mental health. With her extensive experience, she has developed a unique ability to connect with individuals of all ages, particularly children, on their level.

Amy utilises her expertise to support families and children struggling with hoarding tendencies. She creates fun-filled, age-appropriate sessions that make what could be a traumatic experience manageable and even enjoyable, her patient and empathetic approach has already shown remarkable results, helping individuals grow and thrive throughout their journey.

Building on this vital frontline work, Amy has pioneered the UK’s first Child-Specific Hoarding Risk Assessment Tool (HATCH), a groundbreaking, trauma-informed practice that puts children at the centre of safeguarding. This is due to launch very soon and will be accessible to all practitioners who support children in hoarded homes.

Amy’s dedication to children and families is truly remarkable, with her compassion and creativity changing lives everyday. This nomination is so well deserved and we cannot wait to celebrate at the awards ceremony taking place on Thursday 9th October✨

Hoarding support is not about “getting rid of stuff” quickly, it’s about giving the person the tools, safety and confidence to move forward at their own pace🏠💕

A trauma-informed approach means looking beyond the items to understand the why, it focuses on creating safety, building trust and offering compassion, allowing the person to feel supported rather than judged.

What are your top tips for building trusting relationships?💭

✨ HATCH is launching soon! ✨

With Hoarding behaviours in children on the rise it’s important to remember that finding comfort in possessions is a very human experience, rather than labelling young people, our focus is on creating safe spaces that respond to their needs.

That’s why our amazing Children and Family Worker, Amy Coulson has developed HATCH, the first child-specific hoarding assessment tool of its kind 🌱

Amy’s work looks a little different from the rest of our team. She brings children into dancing spaces, uses playful activities like “Keep, Keep, Give”, and helps young people learn that it can feel safe to let go, and that they are always worthy of a safe space 💙

HATCH will come with a full training package for practitioners supporting children living in hoarded homes, be sure to keep your eye out for more information on when it will become available.

We are also thrilled that HATCH has evolved into a PhD study called CHIQ 🐣, such a lovely example of our incredible partners at University of South Wales emphasising inclusive and supportive language as they develop this nuanced area of research with us💙

FREE WEBINAR - Children and Hoarding: Hidden Harm, Lasting Impact 💙

Our founder Kayley Hyman will be speaking at a free online seminar tomorrow hosted by CareKnowledge which will look at the rarely discussed experiences of children who live with a parent or carer who hoards, as well as the children and adolescents who show hoarding behaviours themselves.

We are really honoured to be able to be apart of raising awareness to one of the least talked about aspects of hoarding alongside our industry colleague Kat Band from 😊

Safety isn’t just about the home, it’s about the heart and mind too💙

While reducing physical risks in the home is a priority when supporting someone with hoarding challenges, it’s equally important to provide a safe emotional space. Trauma and loss are often the reasons hoarding behaviours develop, and without time and support to work through these experiences, lasting change is much harder to achieve.

Approaching support with a trauma-informed attitude ensures that trust, understanding and respect are central, allowing individuals to process their experiences at their own pace while taking meaningful steps towards reclaiming their space and wellbeing🏡
